Re: Colorado Elk ....

Well Colorado is a fun state to be a weather person,

Denver is butted up against the Eastern slope of the Rockies in a hole, from Denver in all directions you actually go up in elevation but to the west and the south you go up much more, west is the Rockies and the Continental Divide but to the south is the Palmer Divide, much lower then the Continental Divide but the Palmer Divide consistently causes Low Pressure systems based over the New Mexico/Colorado border to pulverize me! call it a natural funnel low pressure wraps up into Denver and then hits a road block on two fronts where the moisture simply cannot get out so I get plastered, right now they are saying 15"-18" possible for me with 12" possible for Denver Metro, Winter Storm Warning from 9PM tonight until about midnight Tomorrow night.

on the other side of the coin these storms typically don't do much to the mountains on the west side of the Continental Divide, of course this is relative as the Mountains are pretty used to getting 15" dumps where as the Front Range considers this a pretty big deal, add to that the temperature, the trees here still have leaves on them, when combined with a wet heavy fall snow you get HUGE tree damage!

Sorry if I presented to much Info, I'm a weather junkie

Couldn't tell!:D Actually, my job depends completely on the weather. I either am watching the weather channel, local weather or weather online almost every day. Lake Superior plays havok with weather around here. Can be a pile of rain just to the west of us, hits the county line and the "dry" lake air and falls apart. We don't get a drop. Or, moisture(rain/snow) hits the lake air and splits, going north and south of us leaving us high and dry. Then we can get a strong N/NE wind and get lake effect snow while it's sunny around us. The forecasters around here have a tough time going day to day trying to predict what will happen. Alot of misses and not too many hits..

Too early for snow yet. Keep it over there Lipp!

Re: Colorado Elk ....

LOL WIMUSKY!! This is actually our 3rd or 4th snow this year but its the biggest so far this year(Potentially), We can get snow from early September through May where I live which is just under 7000', I have seen it snow in Colorado in every month of the year due to my job and my love of the outdoors.

I get all giddy when I see one of these "Panhandle Low" (Named after the Texas Panhandle) storms come through, Watch the low travel right down the border and start watching the weather forecasters throw their bets down on Colorado weather russian roullette! All it means to me is that I need to get up a bit early and brush snow off the boat cover and the trees as best I can. If this storm was in January I would get my snow cat out of storage, with this moisture content in January(much lower Temps) you could easily triple the snow total.

Updated possible snow accumulations for me is in the 18" range

SF, Thats some scary stuff!!

What are you saying Philip? You don't want to go over Monument Hill tomorrow? LOL

I don't mind it so much since I started working in Lone Tree, but I have to say not commuting over monument on days like tomorrow I will not miss one bit!

LOL Your weather people are no better than ours........ If I recall, can't Denver hit 70 in the middle of winter too? You guys start early and end late but get a reprieve in the middle melting a bunch.... Heck, lately we even get a bunch of rain in January... Makes for a solid base on snowmobile trails. A mess for everything else tho, especially after it freezes.....

Re: Colorado Elk ....

Yeah we almost never have snow on the ground a week after the storm, I think the longest we have had snow on the ground was a couple years ago when at one time I had about 40"s on the ground and it lasted for about a month but we had a powerful snow storm every two days for two weeks each storm brought 10" of snow man that was fun, I believe it was December and January 2 or 3 years ago! Monday it was 80 degrees and today its snowing this weekend forecast is upper 60's lower 70's, this is far more common then having snow on the ground for longer then 4 days.

The nice thing about having 10" dumps is the traffic is GREAT!!!

BBRRRRRRRRR, got heavy frost here this morning, yesterday morning there was a dusting of snow about the 4000 foot mark (looked across the valley).
Just seen on the TV that Denver got 10 cm or 4-5 inches, please keep it down there a little longer "PLEASE" :D.

How you doing Aspeck??, dropped that big elk yet??

I am betting you have the winter woolleys on, and drying your boots every couple of hours.

backwards this time around. Little colder up north and a little more snow but not much. I think it's supposed to snow most of the day but this is a disappointment for sure.

Hah, the anemometer on my weather station is frozen solid. wind 00/00. won't see that often

Re: Colorado Elk ....

Got soaked yesterday, had to dry out the cell phone ... no internet connection last night. I always seem to do better in inclement weather ... still snowing, but started as rain, sleet, thunder, hail, miserable weather yesterday. Oh, did I mention I shot a cow in the morning while it was still nice (50 yard standing shot). Got it in, hung up and skinned out and went back out for the evening hunt. It turned miserable but I shot a smallish 5x5 at 5:30. It looked a lot bigger in the rain!

I had to make a 400 yard stalk on him and I was busted half way along by a herd of mule deer, but fortunately they left in the opposite direction of the bull and 6 cows. Ended up making a 250 yard shot because there was no longer anything else to hide behind and I knew I needed to clean the scope off before shooting.

Internet connection is a little slow, but I will try to get some pictures uploaded.

Chris, your forcast was spot on ... guys saw a bunch of animals this evening ... the deadeye of the camp missed a decent 5x5 bull at 200 yards. None of us can believe he missed.

Looking forward to a good day tomorrow. Have to pull out on Friday noon or early afternoon sometime ...
