There is only one word you should remember when having a colonoscopy, or any other procedure...it's PROPOFOL.

Your doctor will know what you are talking about. You won't remember the procedure...or what you said....or what anyone said...

You will wake up in a great mood, ready to move on....

When I have a physical and get my prostate checked, I asked him, "don't I at least get dinner first"?! Like he's never heard that before.......
When the female doctor asked me if I minded her giving me my prostate check or should she get the male doctor. I took one look at her skinny fingers and said "You are fine".

OH What fun i have to look forward to!

My Doc wants me to have one this year.Getting old sucks!
Mine too. I'm two yrs overdue. So far haven't been able to bring myself to do it. Doc sent me home with a self test that detects blood, said it's better then nothing. Haven't been able to do that either.

I currently do those annually. My friend who got the cancer was doing those as well and they didn't detect the cancer. Thats why I am going to get the colonoscopy. My girlfriend's brother is a gastro doc. He says I should get the colonoscopy. The prep is the hardest part becuase you can't stray to far from the bathroom. My plan is to do it on a Monday and prep on the Sunday watching football games on the couch with the DVR able to pause the games a few times :)

Re: COLONOSCOPY. Who hasn't been there?

When I got to the hospital to have my colonoscopy, I mentioned to the nurse that I wanted them to use a brand new scope. I explained to her why I wanted a new scope which was, "I read an article where several vetrans at a vetrans hospital contracted Aids from under sterlized colonoscopy scopes." I was not at a vetrans hospital and they had the sterlization person come in to re-asure me that the scope was properly sterilized and that they could not be giving everybody a new scope because they cost a few thousand dollars a piece.

Re: COLONOSCOPY. Who hasn't been there?

I already told my doctor that I'm probably going to be the first man in history(that may be pushing it) that actually "requests" the procedure. I have 1 1/2 years to go for insurance to pay for it. I figure, why not have a procedure that can detect polyps early b/4 they potentially go cancerous. Or, if they are cancerous, deal with the issue before it becomes bigger than it already is. Colon and prostate issues are easily dealt with if caught early. Sign me up!

Don't worry, I requested one at the age of 26. Had blood in my poo and colon cancer runs in the family. Had an aunt die in her early 30's and an uncle in his late 30's. On a good note, even the purging was a breeze. Last meal before fasting had corn with it and the last thing I heard before drifting off with a mile long scope up my *** was "WE HAVE CORN":p

If you think a colonoscopy is embarrasing, imagine how many eyes are going to want to have a "look see", when you get colon cancer.

Time to man-up. It's really no big deal.

Thanks for the laugh, was a good story, but on the serious side, glad to hear you're all set.

Colon Cancer is no joke and can spread like a wild fire, faster than you can blink. We just lost an aunt to it this summer.

To anyone over 50 on here, get er done!! :)

Along with all the negatives, you have to look at the positives......that is some of the best sleep you'll ever have.

Missed out on the fun.

I was put out, so after about 3 seconds, it's nighty-night.

I lasted about 90 seconds tops. Then woke up higher than Cheech and Chong:pStill had issues farting because I knew everyone was observing making sure I actually did it:redface:Had it done in the morning and reported to work that night. Think I was still a little under the influence that night.

Re: COLONOSCOPY. Who hasn't been there?

When the female doctor asked me if I minded her giving me my prostate check or should she get the male doctor. I took one look at her skinny fingers and said "You are fine".

The same thing happened on my only prostate exam. Wasn't looking forward to it AT ALL, but those skinny lady fingers looked more appealing than some guys sausage fingers.

When I had my colonoscopy, the nurse that was prepping me said I was ready and the doc would see me shortly. I was surprised, because they hadn't given me a shunt and IV to prepare for knocking me out. She said that they weren't going to knock me out, and that I would be OK.:eek:

She said that my insurance may not cover it. I told her to go out and find my wife in the waiting room and she would write them a check for whatever they needed, because there was no way they were going to shove that thing up there while I was awake! Either that, or they could give me my clothes cause that just wasn't going to happen.

The nurse seemed a little miffed, but they gave me the sedative. I just found it odd that they assumed that a patient would be ok with it.

One time my mom had one done without getting knocked out. She said NEVER AGAIN and she's tougher than most.

Re: COLONOSCOPY. Who hasn't been there?

My Mum died of colon cancer at age 69. (18yrs back).
Not sure how it works, but it got to the liver.
From the time it was diagnosed till death was about 8 weeks.
When I told my Doc he had me in for a colonoscopy, and they did remove pollops. I am on a 3 yr cycle.
I put this thread up, as I believe it best we take the time to talk about these issues.
Had my Mum been thru the procedure then she would have survived for a lot longer.

If I could make the point to those that may be avoiding it, then please be re-assured, the only bad part of the complete experience is the dam-ned jungle juice, so maybe you should just do it!

Good luck
Cheers

Phillip, I do wholeheartedly agree with you on this, however since good ole' common sense never fully prevails this sad and unfortunate scourge will continue to plague mankind well into the unforeseeable future.

Re: COLONOSCOPY. Who hasn't been there?

My brother went to the Dr for flu like symptoms that just didnt want to go away. Just as a precaution from a few of the symptoms they decided to do a colonoscopy. Verdict? Colon cancer. They resected a few feet of his bowl and the lymph nodes that were close by for biopsy. Did a full course of chemo and now 6 years later is still cancer free and has been upgraded to the 3 year plan. The doctor that did the surgery told my brother that had he come to him with those symptoms he wouldn't have considered a colonoscopy...kudos to the doctor that ordered it! He also said that if he had siblings that they should also get checked. 3 out of 4 had pre-cancerous polyps! If your sitting on the fence for getting it done, just go do it! If my brother hadnt gotten his done when he did he wouldnt be with us today.

Re: COLONOSCOPY. Who hasn't been there?

I had my first one last year. From the waiting room, they took me down a small hall, through a set of double doors into the "prep" area. This is the area where you put on the gown and they double check that you are who you are (don't want to do the wrong procedure on the wrong person) and a few other things. This room is about 1,000 square feet. When ready, they wheeled me through another set of double doors, across a hall, and into a "procedure room" with a closed door. Now here's where it gets fun. My procedure took about 2 1/2 times longer than normal. The reason was I snore VERY loudly. According to the nurse, I started snoring almost immediately. So loud that they heard me in the waiting room. Every time the Doc pushed the scope in further, I let out a very loud "snort". Apparently the doctor and nurse could not stop laughing. Afterward, they asked if I knew I snored. Like I've never been told before.

For those who think they may put this off, don't. Man Up and get it done. This is your health you're talking about. The consequences of not catching a problem early can be devastating - even to the point of "life threatening". It's not worth the risk. As others have stated, you won't even be awake for the procedure. The worst part is the prep, and although unpleasant, it's not that bad. Ever had diarrhea . Sort of the same thing.
