I think a lot of it has to do with Finals week at most colleges falls between Deceber 1st and the week before Christmas. So they "give the players off" for finals. After all, they are academic institutions, not sports institutions ...
College ballplayers take exams? I read somewhere that 0ver 60% of those drafted in the NFL have not yet earned a degree. The number is higher for Basketball, not basket weaving Basketball.
I did some fact checking. A report in 014' said of Bowl eligible college football players 51.5% graduated compared to the 74% of regular male students that did graduate. If you look at NCAA stats the number of college athletes graduating is much higher. That number is for all sports and all genders.
