Hi all,
i have a Cranchi 21" with a 434a 4.3 v6 (1993) coupled to a DP-C1 outdrive and I have a few questions. I renovated the boat over the winter and had it in the water for the first time yesterday, I am finding the boat hard to start when cold, it will fire immediately off the key run for 3 seconds and then die, after this it will keep dying and I have to have a friend operate the throttle on top of the engine, rev it a few times to warm it up and it idles ok. Just wondered if there is a recommended procedure for this as I go out on my own quite a bit and my arm wont reach from the key to the engine bay:D? I am aware that its a carbed engine and will have its own personality!! Also a couple of times out on the water when going from idle to shifting into gear it almost died as well? I have fitted new plugs, drained the fuel tank and system fitted new fuel filter and filled with fresh gas (other than that she went great!)
Also what temp should I see roughly when running? seemed to be running quite cold?
Thanks for any advice

Regarding the throttle, you should not have to work the throttle at the carb. Your controls should have a method to be able to pump the throttle without it going into gear. On my boat the whole thottle lever pulls out, then any movement is throttle only.

It sounds like to me you need to pump the throttle a couple of times before cranking, then maybe a few more pumps spaced out until it settles in. This is normal for a carbureted engine.

Running temperature should be 160 or so.

You should download a manual for your engine and drive if you have not already done so. Take this link, and type in 434 in Engine Type and click Search....:

Thanks for taking the time to reply,
Yeah what I need is a seperate throttle control, on my previous boats (all with outboards) each one seemed to like a different amount of gas to start and rev to clear their throats a bit and had levers etc to allow you to rev without going into gear. This is my first inboard and my control doesnt seem to have any way to throttle it wthout going into gear unless I am missing something really obvious:D and i apologise for the stupid question.
Here is a pic of my lever

Is there a button on the pivot point near the bottom??? On mine, you press that and advance the throttle without going into gear.

there are generally two types of common I/O controls with integrated gear/throttle. one you push the button in at the pivot to disengage the drive (throttle only) , the other you gently pull the arm and pivot out.

This is from the first page of the owners manual that you can download from the link Maclin posted.

never feel stupid unless you didnt ask the question. remember, the only dumb question is the one not asked. we all have to start learning from somewhere.

Hey win-or-bin, sometimes a more experienced person will seem to hone in on your problem with ease, mostly because of their own experience.

Get the picture :)
