How do I know whether my starter is clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation? It's a 1984 MCM 488r, and I need a new starter, and the shop wants to know which one it is.

I'm having a mechanic do it, and want to get the new one before he starts. I don't want to pay the mechanic to do the running around to get the starter.

Id still get the mech to compare the two before install. Never been too sure whether cw refers to starter rotation or engine rotation. They are of course opposite. One thing I DO know is if you put the wrong one in and hit the starter ,if your boat is in the water you stand a good chance of sucking up the ocean into your cylinders. This is not condusive to a good start to your fishing day.

Re: Clockwise or Counter-clockwise starter?

yours is a left hand rotaion engine, more commonly referred as standard rotation

best is to bring the old starter in and compare the cut on the gear to the new starter - this will ensure you are getting the same rotation starter
