Clear coat?

I have an 81 cajun, and it looks to have a clear coat w/metalflake over gel coat.
I waxed the cap on the bow and it faded too a white haze.(micro webbing in the coating)
I've sanded it with 400g, and it's smooth again.
What can I do to get the shine back?
Should I use a wax remover after sanding?
How can you tell if its gel coat or clear coat?
