Engine is a J225TXESS (1990 225hp)

The engine was in salt water before purchase. Now used in freshwater.

Is there any method for flushing the engine cooling passages to remove salt buildup?

Thanks

Yeah, Run it in the freshwater. That is all you need to do.

I agree. Water is the solvent for salt.

However, if the "real" question is removing the corrosion damage caused by salt water without damaging good metal, if anybody can come up with such a product they can become rich.

first..do you know if the owner flushed after use? or did it sit on a dock?

second..why do you question it? any issues?

Last... CLR?? it does a number on calcium, lime and rust..just not sure what it does to base metals? ?..or does it attack the metal?? rust is iron deposits..that are oxidised. the powerhead componets are metal...

Re: Cleaning salt from cooling passages

I pulled the regulator/rectifier (J225TXESS) last night. The passages are spotless, at least that which I can see. Running through fresh water seems to have cleaned them up nicely, and there is no rust or deterioration that I could find. I've head one of the heads off as well with the same observation. I would recommend highly flushing the engines when pulling them out of salt water, which i'm assuming is the standard plan of action...
