If you can remove the tank easily, do so, remove the fuel gauge sender and you should be able to see the gunk. Add a few handfulls of nuts and washers, with some solvent, and swish it around to loosen the gunk. Now dump everything out. You can use a brush with a long handle as well.

A few handfuls of small gravel work well, also...acts as an abrasive to remove deposits. Good Luck!

Thanks guy's for your help. I did run the boat yesterday on a small 3-gallon tank from my jon-boat, the boat started fine, ran ok at first then had no power like it was starving for fuel, could it had been from the smaller tank? the engine is a 1989 Mercury 150 XR-2. Gonna drain, remove and clean the tank and let you know the results, again thanks guy's....
