Welcome to the iBoats Dry Dock!

www.uscomposites.com is a great source for your materials.

This will give you an idea of how.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=365820&page=15&highlight=micks110

So I am having some trouble figuring out all the steps. I read through a bunch of the thread but looked like it was mostly seacast.
So questions are you wrapping the entire floor with mat? Or just each 4' section?
After you have wrapped the floor around the edges and such, should I run a strip of cloth betwen the hull and the floor to secure it? This is how the old floor was secured to the side.

Note also my hull does not have stringers, it was solid foam under the floor and the floor floated on top, for referecne see some of the pictures above.

Thanks!

Palen,
PalenStringers.jpg
The red Circles show me TWO Stringers in your Boat. These will run all the way to the front of the boat. They may be TOTALLY covered in foam and if so and if they are rotted you will need to dig out the foam and replace them.
The bottom and top of each section of the deck should receive a layer of 1.5oz mat and resin. Wrap the edges.

This is a drawing of how I do my decks. Maybe it will help you. Click on it to enlarge.

And this is how I do my stringers.

Re: Crysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

Sorry I have taken some better pictures, the parts you circles are only the box for the rear well. There are in the picture you can see those boards do not go forward. They are glass on top of the closest thing to stringers this boat has.
These two boards appear to be laminated stock, and only goes about half way up the length of the hull and is not very tall, only about an inch. They were compleately covered in foam and the floor floated on this foam. Also those boards are glassed in only about half of their own length. If you look closely at the pictures (sorry about the dust was cleaning up the old floor joints) you can see where the glass stops and raw wood starts and then ends.

This has been a issue for me as I have not found a boat restore like this at all with any detail and is giving me headaces.
Pictures attached, sorry for the confusion, thanks for the details on your layers though that is cool to know.

No problem, sorry for causing the inital confusion. I am going to do my best to reproduce what was there when I tore it out. Thanks for your input!

Re: Crysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

First part of the transom layup went in last night. Was really hot cut down on the catalyst a lot but it still setup fast. That said I am more worried about getting the first layer of plywood bonded well to the rear hull. Pictures attached.

We have hull, 1 layer of 1.5oz mat, 3/4" ply, 1.5oz mat, 3/4" ply,

It was then all clamped in place and some screws from the back hull into the transom these were put in last but most of it was cured. Will see how it comes out before we put a final layer of mat on the last layer of ply.

Re: Crysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

Well attached are the pics of trimming the execs off the first set of layups of the transom. I will be on vacation next week (without a boat darn) but when I get back I will finish the final layers of fiberglass and post the results of sealing it all in.

Question, whats a good way to install a new drain tube? I don't have a flanging tool. Thanks!CIMG0269.jpgCIMG0266.jpgCIMG0268.jpgCIMG0267.jpg

Well put the bi-axle fabric on the transom, started fitting for the new splash well,
I must say that two part expanding foam when it starts going it starts going fancy stuff.

Re: Crysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

I didn't have enough foam to make a foam base upto the bottom, I will get some more fill it to over the top and then sad a flat surface with a power sander. (Yes dust!). Once I have a flat surface I will put down glass wrapped 3/8" just like the factory joint them together with a strip and run a strip along the sides just like the original.

Re: Crysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

I know I am a little late to this restore thread, but just saw your post on the Chrysler Crew board. Anyhow, I have no idea if my boat's stringers are anything like yours, but I have a some good shots of them on my picasa album when I did mine. It is a '73 Chrysler Conqueror S-III. Different hull, yes, but it may give you an idea of how Chrysler laid them out, and what may have been lying under that foam : https://picasaweb.google.com/jlsperko/ConquerorSIII?authuser=0&feat=directlink Also, I put my deck down first, had some holes drilled and poured my foam through there. It was much easier that way, then you just put the wood back in the holes, seal it up, then glass the deck. At this point, you may just want to put the deck on, drill a few holes, and fill to the bottom of the deck. Save yourself some sanding. Just don't overfill as you see how that foam likes to expand.

Re: Crysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

Re: Crysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

If you look back there was some talk of my stringers, this boat almost doesn't have them. Two very small (3/4" tall) not even a center stringer. The entire floor floated on a huge block of foam, no frames. I have not found anything else like it.

Because of this my new foam is 3lb / Cu ft. Little stronger that foam is structural in my mind.

I did not have a good way to mix foam and inject it though holes under the floor. That said for the rest of the foam I have a guy who does closed cell spray foam insulation for housing he is going to finish it and has the right tools for laying foam even.

I know I am in for a lot of sanding. Thank goodness for compressed air sanders.

Re: Chrysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

Ok some updates,
Started roughing in the floor and got the rest of the foam in. In this case I got it from Superior Spray Solutions www.foam123.com , they do spray foam insulation but its the same stuff 3lb, closed cell. If your in the Michigan area they will probably do your boat also.

Next finishing the floor in glass and putting things back together.

What do people like for carpet or flooring over their decks? Also anyone have opinion on PolyGlow and PolyOx?

Re: Chrysler Charger 151 Winter Project (first boat)

IMHO you need to do some research on the importance of structural foam and the strength of a boats hull. Your foaming methods are suspect when taking all of the structural components into consideration. Any voids, in the foam will cause issues as well as 3lb foam while fairly sturdy would not have been my choice. 4lb would have been a minimum for a boat with no substantial stringer system and relying on the foam for it's main structural integrity.
