Here's a picture of the "fragged" old stator prior to pulling it the first time. Note the orientation:

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

I pulled the flywheel this morning and loosened the stator:

The stator has the same dash number as yours A17:

I then installed the stator with the same orientation as your installation:

I cranked the engine and.......No Spark!

I removed the flywheel and reinstalled the stator like the old one:

I just ordered three new CDM's and will let you know what happens when I install them. Any other ideas that I can try before the new coil packs arrive? Thanks......

No , we have exhausted all options , At this point I would recommend a switchbox replacement but as you have CDM I think you are getting what you need .

PS Your stator orientation is correct , The pic I sent is of one that I pulled off a boat that was junked . But my old stator was still an A17 ,(read all my parts log records) Got to start looking for it !

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

Boats.net has two CDM's available and one on back order. It may take a week or more before I receive them. It looks like another holiday weekend without the boat (Easter and now Memorial day).

I will let you know what happens after I install the three new CDM's. If I have no spark then, I will attach a lightning rod to the engine and perform a rain dance (I will have lost my mind by then trying to figure this out)!

Thanks kindly for all of your help!

Please remember there is a very specific procedure for the lightning rod fix , This must include video footage to be posted and you do not need to worry about the rain dance , The voltage will make you move just like you are doing one ... BTW I have heard that this will also produce spark on all plug leads :D

PS my mind left me after I bought my boat no need to worry :)

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

Today I received three new CDM's. I promptly installed them, cranked the engine and......wait for it........wait for it.............NO SPARK!!!!!!!!!!:confused::mad:

I called Mercury in Wisconsin (920) 929-5040 prompt three

After a long conversation with the tech, he had a conference with the other techs. The conclusion they came up with is that I had installed the wrong flywheel. This idea came about due to the clue that my trigger voltages were 5, 6 and 17 volts. Apparently all three voltage outputs should be similar and not so widespread.

The flywheel that I had installed is 859241T10 (superceeded the previous number of: 817494A2). It was recommended to purchase flywheel: 859236T14. When I see pictures of this flywheel online, it looks quite different. There are not three threaded holes to install a puller like my old flywheel (and the flywheel I recently installed). There is a threaded flange that protudes above the center hole that would take a special flywheel puller from what I can see.

An illustrated parts drawing of the newly ordered flywheel can be seen at this link (part number 41):

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...ONV KIT (835084A1) COMPONENT PARTS/parts.html

To date this is what I have spent:

Flywheel (the one I just ordered) $407
Stator ...................................$181
Trigger .....................................$61
Voltage Regulator......................$135
Starter .....................................$80
Battery .....................................$80
3 CDM's ...................................$211
Aspirin ........................................$5
Beer ..................................Priceless!

Hopefully I will have it by next Wednesday to install and if all is well my family and I can take the boat out Memorial day weekend. If this does not rectify the problem, then the lightning rod fix is next!:D

GOT IT !!!! ... your stator is installed with the wrong orientation ... Unless you have to put it on in the 120 position with CDM's .... Try rotating it one hole clockwise and see what happens !

SHARP eye!! I like that! Some of you guys are AWESOME!

Was that an attempt at sarcasm?

If so, I am willing to try just about anything to get this engine running again and I appreciate and have appreciated any suggestions.....Do you have one?

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

Thanks for chiming in. Could you elaborate?

What is the part number of your flywheel that would work? Do you have pictures that you could post? It amazes me that my old flywheel looks just like my new flywheel and yet may be the cause for no spark in my ignition system.

How was your problem diagnosed and what is left to complete your repair?

Thanks....

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

Yes I have read that thread.

My old flywheel looks like the new flywheel in the pictures that I posted (and have tried to work ad nauseum). That is what has had me scratching my head.

I am expecting another flywheel in the mail soon, (I assume) similar to your previous link (and what I linked for Boats.net further up on my chain of information). I am really curious if this will return my spark.

Is your engine running normally now?

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

I had my first day out on the boat yesterday, I cant tell you how great it was.
after close to 30 hours of work its done....... kinda, now its to the ride plate that i mucked up while working on it.

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

I wish i would of seen your post sooner. I would have sold you this flywheel for under 100 bucks shipped. it seems the xr (newer flywheel) flywheel's magnets are not glued on but heat bonded or some other bonding, much better design.

Yes, I have tried my old trigger.

Does the new flywheel allow for my tapered crankshaft or is it a different design (non-tapered for example)? Are the magnets six separate ones or one piece? Do you have a picture? Thanks....

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

I think here is what is going on ... you have a converted sport jet to cdm ignition system , it has been posted they got real cheap for a reason.. it will work with the old flywheel and trigger . But once you got the trigger for the CDM system you need the correct flywheel to make it work due to the fact that the trigger magnet on the flywheel, as well as the trigger pick up points are different for the CDM, Therefore you had mismatched parts . Wait for the part to get there and relax !!
All these updates and conversions can make these boats very hard to work on . This one had me in a mind tizzy for a few days .

PS you do not want to know my beer bill on this one :)

Re: Chronomania Sport Jet 90

Did you check and make sure the kill switch lanyard is in the proper position?

Did you unplug the rev limiter?

Try disconnecting the black/yellow stripe wire from the ignition box. Then see if you get spark.

If you get spark, that means that wire is grounded somewhere, or the key switch is bad.
