Ayuh,.... I've got a couple of V8 long blocks holdin' my houseboat durin' the summer months,.... ;)

Lotsa good parts still on that 1,...

At the top of the Mercruiser forum is the Adults Only section,...
Don has packed it chock Full of Great Info, for the things yer about to do...

Good Luck, 'n Welcome Aboard....

:)

Thanks!

Picked up the engine and outdrive today!

Guess I could take the 4,3 apart and try to sell parts of it, but pretty much everything on is is junk part from the internals (which I think is OK).

Since I?ve found pretty much any video about boat restoration entertaining, and it also seems to be a good way of explaining challanges and problems to get help, I?ve made my first atempt to document my restoration today.

Dont be to hard on me guys, its my first video and English is not my native language... :)

Please give me feedback, if you find it worth watching.

Also did a short vid on how the boat looks right now. Hard to get a good angle where you see anything else than tarp, but I can assure you there is a boat under there...

Edit: Thanks mrdjflores!

Hey 24-7,
Nice boat... Always like to see a Chris Craft brought back to life, and I hear they are popular (particularly the Lancers) in your part of the world.

That 5.7 looks in really good shape. The only thing I would check is to look on the block under the manifolds carefully and make sure you don't see any cracks (I got duped and had someone paint over a hairline crack).... Just a little FYI since it gets pretty chilly over your way.
It looks really well cared for though.

The drive and the transom assembly look a little rough, but it does like you got a brand new -u-joint and drive shaft (which is nice)... Slap some paint and decals on it and you will be good to go....

On your transom cut-out, don't forget to cut the relief spots on the inside of the transom to give your steering arm room for a full turning radius.

Looks good so far - thanks for sharing...

Sorry for not responding sooner, it has been a crazy week at work.

I have dedicated some time to order parts though, and the packages are starting to roll in :D

Hey Jas! read your 10000-posts, post... Thanks for sharing! iBoats shure seem like a nice hangout, the support amongs mebers (not just on boating issues) seems to be better than any other forum I?ve been on.

Have had a closer look at the 5,7 now and I still cant find anything wrong with it, so im just going to do plugs, filters, and oil, and drop her in.

That makes us atleast two people looking forward to her the 5,7 jump to life (in the boat). :)

Thanks! Not that it really matters (in reality its just fiberglass and plywood) but to me it feels a bit extra special that this is a Chris Craft! The brand shure do carry a serious legacy. When I tell people I?m restoring a Chris Craft, they always think it?s a mahogany racer :)

A lancer in good condition can go for really high amounts here. Just saw one for sale for $50 000:eek:

I have looked pretty closely at the block and the mainfolds, and can not see any cracks. This is actually a really common problem here, people forget to winterize and as soon as the temperature drops below 30 (its actually below 30 right now...) the block cracks. There are loads of engines fore sale with cracked blocks here.

I?ve just taken delivery of everything I need (I think) to rebuild the Alpha one, and service the engine.

On the transom cut out, good point, thanks! Guess I will have to dryfit the drive before epoxying and painting the sides of the cutout. Good to have more experienced guys looking out for me so I dont do anything really stupid :)

Since I?ve already gotten tons of help being on iBoats, I will try to document my progress so that my experiences pherhaps can help others later on.

Appreciate your input, thanks!

Re: Chris Craft Scorpion 186 Restoration, On the lake!

Threw a drive-stand together. Grinding down the old paint and removing old "sea creatures"

Parts are starting to roll in. I thinkt this is basically all I need to refurb the drive and service the engine (some part are not in the picture)

This is a setback! The Marina that removed the engine and drive did not include the "give gas without gear" -button or the screw to hold the lever on to the control box. Think I?ve found the parts i need, but are not really shure whats holding the lever to the controlbox pictured below.

Re: Chris Craft Scorpion 186 Restoration, Video part 1

Ok,

Sorry for not posting in a while, THE BOAT IS NOW SPLASHED and works great! We used it for wakeboarding yesterday in 44F water, really happy so far, but the road has been long...

The 5,7 is ALOT of engine in this boat, does 46 mph with a 17" pitch prop, I guess a 21" would be more suited for the boat, maybe even a 23". However top speed is not really on top of the list, the boat will be used mainly for wakeboarding (20mph) which is about 2200 rpm, and pretty fuel efficient.

I'll post some pictures shortly.

Re: Chris Craft Scorpion 186 Restoration, On the lake!

Have been using the boat alot so far this summer and it has been working great with reallly only one issue to sort out this winter besides the usual upgrades.

The only major issue is vibrations that get worse with higher rpm. I have a almost new gimbal bearing and cv joint so i guess it is down to poor alignment. I used a proper alignment tool but was not sure when it was good enough, after 4 hours och lowering and raising the engine I got tiered and decided it was good enough, I guess i was wrong...

here are a couple of pictures.

Just after aligning the engine and mounting the outdrive. Will have to do this again...

Nice days on the lake with family and friends, my daughther in the middle. Not even three years yet and already brave enough to try going in the "tube" with me :)

4.jpg
I kept the interior layout very simple and rough, with only two seats and opted for a sunbed over the engine. This has proven to be a good choice when loading up with wakeboards, waterskis, ballast and people.

The list of upgrades for next season is growing and includes:
-Swim platform
-GPS-based Cruise Control (for wakeboarding)
-Stereo
-Wakeboard tower

Need to get a decent trailer first though...

Congrats on splashing and having fun!
The pay off is in the smiling faces...
Definitely get the vibration sorted out...having to re-do it now is still going to be cheaper than having to replace a bunch of expensive parts later on...
Best of luck and be sure to drop by with FUN pics whenever you get a chance...:D

Re: Chris Craft Scorpion 186 Restoration, On the lake!

Thanks!

Yeah, need to get the vibrations sorted but the boat-season is so short here in Sweden (May to September at best), so I guess I will wait until september and just restrain myself from high rpm:s where the vibrations are worst until then.

Just busted my eardrum yesterday when wakeboarding and landing on my head, apparently 30% of it is gone... The wake behind the boat is pretty big with 1000 pounds of ballast :D

Since I?m not wakeboarding for a while and the rest of the family only wants to go out in perfect weather, I?ve made the terrible misstake of JUST LOOKING at what other possible bigger boat projects are out there... Hope I dont find anything to tempting :joyous:

Re: Chris Craft Scorpion 186 Restoration, Video part 1

Sooooo..... I..... bought this other bigger boat... :D

Needed a new winter project, and something bigger to be able to sleep the family for a couple of nights.

på_trailer.JPG

It?s a Larson 250 Hampton which was really cheep due to water intrusion in the engine. Starboard mainfold have rusted out and saltwater has leaked in atleast one cylinder.

Dont know if I will keep the Chris Craft or sell it next spring.

Will start a new thred on the Larson.

After the great job you did on the Chris Craft, I will be anxious to see what you do to the Larson!

Did you ever get the vibrations sorted out? And how's your eardrum doing?:horn:

BTW, you should keep the CC for those short, one day, wake boarding, skiing and fishing outings and the Larson for the long weekend trips...:D

Thanks!

The whife is pregnant and we are suppose to have a second daughter in november so time will be an issue, but I will do my best!

The vibrations are still there but are not as violent as they were in the beginning. I will realign the Engine this Winter to fix this.

And the eardrum has nearly healed, healing a bit to slow if you ask me

Might keep the Chris Craft, I think I can get away with it if I sell my other two smaller boats.:D
