From what I can see it goes on after the water tube grommet and is item 86 in the diagram.

I may be totally off base, but seems like I remember that there's a groove inside the driveshaft grommet (#85) into which the O-ring fits ... ?!?!

I was reading over the manual again. What I understandfrom reading the manual says "mount the gear case in a suitable holding fixture. Remove driveshaft o ring and discard."
The problem is that the manual doesnt say where to remove it from on the drive shaft or where to install the New one. Thanks

If it is just a regular round "O" ring check your spline on your drive shaft. There may be an undercut for it right below the spline. It would provide a seal where the male spline on the shaft goes into the female spline on the powerhead.

Thats where I put it. I Hope its correct. I have put everything back together and am in the process of puttin oil in the gear box. I was told 80w 90 is what I need to use and tto fill from the bottem hole. Is this correct? Thanks

Use marine grade lube 80W90 ... pump it in through the bottom hole until it runs out the top hole. Plug the top hole (with new washer), disconnect filler from bottom hole and quickly replace plug (with new washer).

Re: changing water pump on 1973 85hp evinrude

Ok, I hooked some water muffs up and started the engine. After the start up I now have 3 Questions. Before I started this project There was water that came out of two holes just under the cowl on the back of the engine. Not sure what those holes are for. 1 Can someone tell me? Anyway, Now that I have Changed the pump there is no water coming out of them. 2 Should there be? 3 How canI tell If the pump is working as it should? Thanks

Those are exhaust relief holes. Water may spit out of them but nothing substantial. The majority of the water exiting the motor will come out at the prop. If you start to feel some warm water there you can probably assume the pump it working.

Also, one time instead of using muffs I tried submerging it in a bucket. I didn't have it in far enough and the overheat horn went off after just a couple minutes. So if you run yours for 5-10 with no issue, it's probably cooling fine.

I do not have the alarm hooked up. I started it on a stand. What should the temp run on the engine block? I have a laser temp gauge. Thanks

So far so good then.
What did you use to undo the shift linkage ???
Just interested. I have to get an elaborate set up of 1/4" drive knuckles and extensions to get in. If not it is off with the carbs.
You will need a helper when you re-assemble.

Hey Ken, I found what works best for me (my shift retainer screw is a standard flat head) is a super long flat head screwdriver (I got one from princess auto) and I use gasket sealing compound on the tip (weird I know, but very sticky) to keep the screw from falling, if its being particularly difficult on re-insertion I will actually superglue the screw to the screw driver and then just break it lose after its inserted.
