I have a Mercury 20hp Long shaft Serial #0G018794, I am new to boat motors, need help on how to replace/change lower unit, I twisted my prop shaft and I found a lower end for it cheaper than a new shaft would have cost, I was told it is pretty easy to change.
Will a need any special tools? Do you have it in gear or in neutral? HELP

remove lower unit, (i didnt bother looking up the year) make sure you get ALL the bolts out... there is likey one at the back sort of under the zinc anode. i would say put it in neutral, put shifter in neutral..... install.... smile.... avoid the log/rock/boatramp that caused last twisted prop shaft .....enjoy.

special tools.... wrenches... i think one allen head key and a beer. might find needle nose pliers useful as well .... dont forget the beer. you will also want grease on hand as good to grease the drive shaft ends while the LU off... and may want to just replace or at lease carefully inspect water pump and impeller (strongly suggest replacing impeller just to be sure)
