Changed battery now starter sounds is ill

I had just took out a batterry to fully charge it. Put it back in did not cross wires but there was some good sparking upon connection. Went to start port 1996 150 johnson oceanrunner which has always crnked and now just winds. Bedix does not engage to turn motor and some gauges on dah are pegged out. Could there be a fuse that is blown or worse. what would be the next thing to eleminate

Check the polarity of that battery. If you didn't hook it up backwards, it sounds like you charged it backwards. And if so, you just blew at least one water cooled voltage regulator/rectifier assembly.

Try a different battery. It could have been on it's last legs when you took it off. Either way get that one the heck off there. Clean and check all connections.
Why did you need to charge it in the first place ??

Battery was drained down because of bilge pump pushing out alot of rain water. Battery gauge indicated full correct charge prior to hooking it back up. However stranger things have happened, I will swap out with other battery to trouble shoot. If problem remains where would be the next place to look?
