Re: Championship Weekend

I would love to see it go back to the old days of racing, when the crews actually built their own cars instead of the sanitized version we have these days. As with many things in life, it has become a cookie cutter business, for the most part, you can't even tell the differences in the cars on the track, they pretty much look the same.

I think teams even have a Tape Specialist. You know, the guy that puts the tape on steering wheel so these "racers" know where straight ahead is.

Re: Championship Weekend

Hey Musky -- While hunting with my 81 yr old Dad this week (he still makes it up the hill despite bad knees), we had plenty of time to talk with no phones, radio, or TV. I knew he had a friend named Red for 10 yrs until he passed away in 2010 down in FLA. What I didn't know is that Harold "Red" Cummings was a pioneer in Nascar stock car racing from 1948 (after he served at Iwo Jima) thru 1960's. He was part of the first stock car racers and regularly battled Fireball Roberts for the championship every year. He was inducted into the New England Nascar Hall of Fame in 2006. My Dad told me stories that amazed me how Red travelled the east coast living in his car between races and how he worked in garages along the way in exchange for parts and fuel. DAVE DYKES' RACING THROUGH TIME I only met him once 15 yrs ago and had no idea. Bet he would have a lot to say about the current state of Nascar.

Had to tape races this weekend, so had to avoid thread. I actually enjoyed the Cup race. Especially the last 100 laps. It's always fun when you're begging for a caution or cussing one

Good stuff, Angus. I haven't had a chance to read the link. I did open it and saw the old cars. Those boys knew how to race. Those days you actually had to drive the cars.

Sounds like you had a great talk with your dad. Sometimes hunting takes a backseat to bonding with family. Great to here he still enjoys getting in the woods. Our firearm season starts this Saturday. Can't say I'll still be hunting in my later years..... But you never know.....

Re: Championship Weekend

I always like the old timers talking about driving the family car to the track, popping the hub caps, taping headlights and go racing. That was stock car racing!

Glad you got up close and personal with the four pointers. Maybe they will remember an "old friend" when you see them again and they have 6 or more points. :D That's if your dad doesn't beat you to the shot. Sounds like it was a good time!
