Re: Championship week-Who wins the big games?

I have been doing it for 35 years, it isn't so bad ,well sometimes.

I have read some stuffthat would have the IRISH doing pretty well in the SEC, not that I would want to be in that conference,

I have watched quite a few SEC games and am not super impressed, the Florida-Florida state game was pretty awful and the first half of the championship game was really flat, neither team looked very good.

It is really silly that there is a month in between the last and championship game, really no reason for it either, will the new play-off system address that?

I really haven't seen alot of details on it and they will still play all the minor bowls yes, the playoff isjust for the championship.

You're partly right about that. It's been 7 years since anyone could beat the SEC, so just one win isn't going to silence the "SEC is the best" talk. And it shouldn't, the SEC is the best. By a lot.

Nebraska gets Georgia in a bowl game? Wow, that is totally undeserved. Florida State getting the Orange Bowl is fine with me, but all I can say is GO HUSKIES! (And to my "alma mater" Kent State, Go Flashes!!!!!)

Capitol One Bowl is a minor bowl. Nebraska deserves to be there. Georgia maybe not. Since the bowl has to pick a Big 10 team and an SEC team you get what you get this year from the Big 10.

Florida State getting the Orange Bowl is fine with me,
You do realize that was an automatic bid right? Also, Florida St had the 69th toughest schedule according to Sagarin so not really sure how good they really are.

So Tilliam, you didn't go to an SEC school?

Then we have the Sugar Bowl. #3 ranked Florida vs #21 Louisville. There's excitement. Shows one of the many flaws in the BCS.
Sure doesn't meet their own criteria:
The BCS is...
The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is a five-game showcase of college football. It is designed to ensure that the two top-rated teams in the country meet in the national championship game, and to create exciting and competitive matchups among eight other highly regarded teams in four other bowl games.

I didn't know this until today. Part of the "automatic qualification". Seems fair.
4. Notre Dame will have an automatic berth if it is in the top eight of the final BCS Standings.

Roll Tide!

Yeah, I knew FSU going the Orange Bowl is an automatic. That's yet another flaw in the BCS. In my opinion all the BCS bowls should pit the highest ranked teams against each other. SO after the Chumpionship game gets #1 & #2, then the Fiesta/Orange/Sugar/Rose should get #3 & #4, and so on. However, if it was that way, teams like NIU wouldn't get a chance to crash the party.

I went to college at University of Cincinnati and Kent State University. Liked OSU when Earl Bruce was the coach, became a Penn State Fan because of Joe Pa, watched the SWC and Big 12 run the wishbone some, saw Miami rise to prominence, fell in love with FSU because of Bobby Bowden, saw the Pac 10 fall to oblivion, then moved to Florida in 1995, where I got to see the SEC more. Came to dislike almost everything about Columbus, OH, the school there, the alumni, and the rsidents of the town. Now I live in Big ten territory again, since 1998. Big Ten is not good. I admit I do like to watch the spread offenses some. I just wish they had defenses to match them, but they don't seem to be able to play both sides of the ball. That's why the PAC 12 team always loses a game it shouldn't and doesn't get to the Chumpionship game. (Kinda like Ohio State under John Cooper!)

Musky, indeed the BCS doesn't do what it sets out to do. it follows the money.

OSU barely beat Cal who got killed by Stanford. OSU wouldn't have a chance.

As far as OSU going to the BCS if they were eligible, wouldn't have happened. Alabama would still be going even with OSU in the mix. Ohio State's strength of schedule was 51st in the country and computer ratings had them ranked around 12.

Wisconsin doesn't have a chance in the Rose Bowl.

I hate to say it but will be the first time in my life I will have ever rooted for Notre Dame.

Gotta love the circular logic of the Poll system.... :)
A beat C who lost to B who hammered D....therefore, my team, F, should get to go to the "Toilet Bowl" because E sucks!

So should Texas A&M not be in, instead of Alabama?.... :)

This has been a banner year for highlighting the absolute stupidity of the "ranking" system....and the need for a playoff format of some type...ASAP.
Alabama was ranked #2, Georgia #3. If the rankings have any credibility whatsoever, why does Georgia lose position because of the narrowest of losses to Alabama? Wasn't that what the rankings suggested should happen?

Watching from a distance, and having no allegiance to any particular team, I have been amazed at the zealousness of some fans who with no rational basis, but with totally myopic belief in their chosen colours, make asinine claims that their team is an absolute lock....can't lose....other team shouldn't be on the same field....etc.
And if a fan of another team makes exactly the same type of baseless claim... fan #1 jumps all over them.:rolleyes:

Polls? I guess that's why they play the games. :D

2014 will be the first season for a playoff. Wish it was at least going to be 8 teams though.

The rankings are inaccurate for one main reason, teams don't play a strong out of conference schedule. The SEC playing a bunch of FCS schools on the last weekend isn't going to tell you much. How do you know how good a set of teams(conference) are if they only play themselves?

Here are the Sagarin ratings:

http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm

It actually provide more info than the polls in my opinion. They need to change the models to include injuries, bad calls and point margin in my opinion. Stanford and Oklahoma are the only ones in the top 10 that played a tough schedule.

....and a bunch of almost as "main" reasons.
If it is so important to "rank" the teams, why not just decide the whole thing by charts and computer analysis and save the expense and effort of playing the games?... :)

What I get the biggest chuckle from is that some polls are done pre-season...before any games have been played.
Amazing.

Agreed. There should be no polls until after the third non-conference game. Everyone should play 3 non conference games and 9 conference games in that order. No non-conference cupcake games at week 11 or 12.

Or just do away with them altogether. :)

How about 16 teams?
Three "BCS Weekends" in December ... Seeded on an ordinal combo of 17 (you know they'll keep the Polls, so use them for that) ....that would get it down to two teams for the big one early in the New Year.

Your welcome....:)

Oh I see...you are basically a BW fan!

No, once I got to see the SEC play more than just a bowl game (where they whip Big Ten teams), I realized that they were the best conference. Now that I am back in Big Ten tv market, the level of play is noticeably lower.

Hence, the definition of a BW fan.

I would be happy with that!

This article pretty much sums up the bowl mess:
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--college-football-s-bowl-season-a-jumbled-mess-053704636.html

So how many bowl games is the Big 10 going to win? They are sending 7 teams.
http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/120212aau.html
They might win one of these.

I just like college football games, especially good ones. One thing I've really enjoyed the last few years is the greater number of not so big name contests on the tube. I've really come to look forward to week night college football.

Nothing like going to a game, tailgating and feeling the excitement in the stadium. Same is true for college basketball games. College sports are so much better than pro.
