CD-10 missing a seal?

Long story short: Bought a old (but runs great) CD-10. Ran great, was cooling just fine, then noticed no water coming out of the exhaust after it was doing so earlier.

Ordered new impeller, but when I took the unit apart, the impeller was just fine. What I noticed, was that there was no seal between the impeller wear plate and bearing housing. In my parts catalog, it shows a seal. http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0327031&ptype=&Engine=&Model=
I did not see that seal when I took apart my unit.

I did not see any broken pieces that would indicate the seal failed. Nothing of that nature.

I am puzzled. Does that seal make the impeller unit operable? It seems that it would just seal away the water from the gear oil in lower unit.

Thanks

That apparently is the upper gearcase seal that is shown on that link. While you have the motor apart, check and make sure there are no blockages in the water tube or any of the water passages. Also, trplace your upper seal if it's missing. Chances are, you have plenty of water in your gearcase oil, if the seal is missing.

That seal would not affect water pump operation. But it does need to be there. Make sure you didn't lose the little key/pin which fits in the driveshaft and turns the impeller.

Okay, I can verify the the upper gearcase seal is in place. Impeller has the key and is in perfect condition. I did learn, that someone did change the impeller and impeller housing unit to a "later sytle impeller and impeller housing kit" . - But apparently that should not have any effect on the cooling system for this unit.
I guess I am at a loss for why the motor will no longer circulate water and keep itself cool.

When I had the powerhead off, I tried with compressed air to blow out the water passeges (in case of clogged debris) through the powerblock. The air will NOT go all the way through when its blasted with the regular water-flow route. But it WILL go through when you blast it from the other direction (opposite of water flow). Why would that be?

Also, I know this was probably a bad idea, but with the powerhead off, I hooked my cordless drill to the driveshaft (lower unit was in the barrel of water, fully reassembled) and spun the drive shaft for 10 seconds or so in the clockwise direction. No water came up the tube.

Any ideas? Thanks everyone.

I would check and make sure the water tube is properly stabbed into the impeller housing. If the tip of the water tube is not oiled properly, then it's likely to collapse the grommet in the top of the impeller housing. Run a wire up and down through the water tube and make sure nothing is blocking it. Often times corrosion will close off the passage, right where the copper water tube goes up into the midsection.

I will double check that water tube that feeds up, but when I hit it with compressed air, it was free and clear. I know what you mean that the tube when it meets up with the rubber seal/gromment on the top of the impeller housing. It gets really tricky to physically see the tube go into it, but I can feel it go in and doesnt seem to be any issues.

Its really strange - Im not a boat mechanic, but have done plenty of mechanical work on my own cars over the years. Nothing seems out of place, missing, or put back together wrong. I might try to find someone local who can walk me through the correct reassembly - maybe I missed something. It was running just fine earlier this year and there was no issue, till just it stoped pumping water all of the sudden.

What about the flow of water that the impeller sucks from? The black rubber type of gasket is kinda stuck on there good, so I dont want to rip it off. How does the water flow in the below pic?

Also check the water level in which you are running your motor. It has to be at least to the lower mount for the waterpump to work. I do believe the gasket goes above the wear plate, rather than benieth it.

In addition to the above, what does the impeller look like when you have it out? In my opinion OMC has done folks a huge dis-service by depicting the impeller the way they do in the parts manuals. The way they show them is what they look like when they're junk! The blades should radiate out straight from the hub. If they're curved then they've taken a set and they won't pump. Good luck!

That is actually a good way to test the water pump. But, you should have had water coming out the water tube if the pump was working properly. Make sure the key is in place and the impeller is snug on the driveshaft. I've seen aftermarket impellers which were too loose on the driveshaft and wouldn't pump water.

if you'll go to marineengine.com....1955..5.5 hp. model no. CD 12....page 15 has the lu diagram and, if it's not too different, it shows the proper location of the gasket in your pic

Re: CD-10 missing a seal?

Al, that is actually the gasket for the upper bearing hub, which goes between the upper bearing and the gearcase. The gasket he is showing in his pic, is the one provided in the new style waterpump kit. I believe this gasket shown goes between the wear plate and the housing, to seal it up good. It would actually be pointless to put it below the wear plate, since water is pulled in through the center. If the housing has an o-ring on the bottom of it, then go ahead and put the gasket below the wear plate.

Like lindy says. hook up a drill to your drive shaft and put the lower unit at the proper level in the water and it should pump water like no tomorrow.

Re: CD-10 missing a seal?

Here are two other pics. The previous owner switched to a smaller impeller unit, and the impeller seems to be in perfect condition. But when I look at my parts catalog diagram, it seems that the black gasket that is above my bearing assembly shouldnt even be there? (but maybe thats because previous owner switched impeller units?)

Yea, oddly enough, I happen to have a couple of these old 5.5's in my little collection. One is a CD-12, which is virtually identical to the one posted here.
You know what's funny? I had a guy bring me a old 7.5 Fleetwin that had a bad powerhead. Come to find out, someone who did a waterpump for him removed that upper bearing hub completely and put it back together without it. YIKES!! But yea, the original impeller housings actually didn't have any gaskets at all. From what I have found, they just used sealer when they built them at the factory.
