Hi, I have a compound question #1 is do I need to have a starting battery for a 2 cycle 30hp Evinrude? #2 what CCA would be sufficient for this motor? Thanks!

Shouldn't need much. How old is it? Even on my old school 28hp Evinrude I prefer a group 31 with at least 750 CCA. A group 21 would suffice but I like more capacity.

I think the right answer here might depend on the skipper's preferences. I can start, and do frequently, a 90 hp Honda 4 stoke using a garden tractor battery installed on my test stand. And it does that easily. There's no grunting involved. If we were talking about MY boat, with no other electrical involved, I wouldn't be a bit shy of something like that. Or maybe even one of those portable jump starters for the twice a year trip to the lake where the battery will be used only rarely??

320 cca, or 400 MCA should do fine.
Dad used a 300 cca lawn mower battery for his 25 hp Merc when his boat battery went south when he was in Canada for a month.

I'm pretty sure my 70 hp manual only calls for 450 cca.

300 CCA will spin it over without an issue.. FWIW I start my 20hp Johnson on the stand with an Everstart U1 lawn tractor battery.

But a battery with such low capacity will also not have a lot of amp hour capacity at all

Thank you, I’m pretty new to owning a fishing boat so there’s a lot I dont know. Would you use just a new “deep cycle” battery or a ”dual purpose marine“ battery to start the motor, run a occasional very small trolling motor, power night lights (occasionall) and occasional very small bilge and live well pump. Thanks ag!

trolling motor almost automatically needs something that will take deep cycle, as long as you have a battery that can deep cycle your good. A dual purpose battery can do the trick
