Re: Cats!!!

We have a cat and a dog. But I do have to agree that even my pets can be a pain when it come to annoying the neighbors and there pets/children/cars/gossip annoys me too. A paint ball gun works well and proves a point or let the city deal with it.

My self I am not a cat person but cats just seem to love me. A stray at work adopted me and when I was at Robs house last summer his cats were all over me for a wile. He said his cats don't take well to strangers but had no problem with me.

Re: Cats!!!

Lordy......please look up what the word feral means and then put it in front of pest.

Why? We have already determined that these cats are a nuisance, and a pest. I will deal with them as such...

I called the local council... No laws on cat control. Their advise was trap them and take them to a shelter... Trap needs to be purchased/hired at MY expense. So, somebody else's little darling is going to cost ME dollars to get rid of... I think if I'm the one forking out, I should be allowed to be the sayer of its final fate!!! And I say I want them gone for good... So I don't have to pay more money again in the future because these inconsiderate 'people' refuse to look after there 'pets' properly!

I don't care what you say, if you really are an animal lover you would keep them in your own yard. Just the way DOG owners are required to.

It really gets my goat that a problem caused by someone's neglect is going to cost me hard-earned money to get rid of...

Swap the last 2 letters of 'pets' and what do you get?!?!?!?!

Chris........

Re: Cats!!!

I myself am not a cat person but I don't mind them outside (other than when they scat in my yard--that is just nasty stuff) My dogs go nuts when they see a cat but no big deal. Two of my neighbors has cats and they stay outside--don't know why they love to crap in my yard. There is one or two of them that always comes and jumps in my boat when I'm working on it--I let them play around for a bit (keep the cover on so they don't have a litter in the boat) The only reason I don't trap them is they keep the snakes out of the yard (we live on a lake).

Yes, only this morning I pulled 3 Tiger snakes out of my boat before I could do any work on it... We've found them in our cars and we check under the bed each night before going to sleep. We also have another poisonous one, a Dugite. They like living around the back of the toilet. It's nice and cool there and they get real bad in summer. I've removed 4 from the toilet in a single day. As well as snakes we have some 'nice' spiders... One called a 'red-back', like your black widow. They like hiding up under logs and the like. They particularly like hiding under the ridge capping on fences....

For the statistics, Australia has 19 of the top 20 deadliest snakes in the world... We just live with them. I like them, they keep the rats in check.. The rats actually attack cats! Maybe that's my problem. I have snakes, which keep the rats down, and that allows the cats in........

Cheers.........

Re: Cats!!!

^^^ So, if I'm reading you right... All you need is some more rats, snakes and spiders to control those pesky cats :D

We had a neighbor cat's' carping in our yard years ago, a big shaker bottle of cayenne pepper sprinkled around took care of that, similar to tx's solution. (Oh yeah, same house as the noisy dogs, different people, renters...) I bought a small animal trap at Harbor Freight ($15), but the people and cats moved away. Still have it, just in case.

When I was a kid I was cleaning out some overgrown shrubbery at our new house and found a couple of beaver traps nestled down in the shrubs. I guess the old owner of the house didn't like cats either

If you say its true, I believe it but I never dreamed it was that bad. My wife had a hissy fit last summer when I told her I found a snake skin from a large but harmless rat snake in our attic. You seldom see any snakes but these here . Please post a picture or 2 of some of your snakes or the types you described. Its very interesting. thanks

I like the idea of letting the neighbors know that you're setting traps and will deliver the 'offenders' to the pound as you catch them. Yeah, it's a pain the you need to buy and set at least one trap, but the cats' owners apparently won't deal with the issue, so it's up to you.

We own 2 cats, neither of which EVER go outside. Years ago we owned a cat that we let wander, and it wound up with Feline AIDS (FIV) which is not uncommon. It was heartbreaking to watch the disease (it isn't transmissable to humans, btw) progress until we finally had to have her put down. It was totally our fault and I felt tremendously guilty about it. Never made that mistake again.

Good luck.

Love the idea of letting the neighbors know that since "It's definetly not their cats", you'll simply trap them and bring them to Animal Control.

Sucks that you have to spend your money on the trap, your time and fuel to do these things. You can do it with a clear conscience, though. To me, that makes it all worth while.

A very well desearved perverbial "kick in the seat" to the inconsiderate, selfish neighbors, too!!!:D

Re: Cats!!!

We had a tenant that fed stray cats. The cats were a nuisance, were not registered and did not have a collar. I asked the tenant several times are you sure this is not your cat? Since she disowned it I caught it and took it over the intercoastal bridge half a mile from the rental. The cat was back before I was. I caught it a second time and took it deep into a swamp frequented by alligators. When I opened the truck door the cat jumped out and looked all around wild eyed. Realizing where it was the cat looked at me, then the open truck door, then at the swamp and started to make a move to get back in the truck. I jumped in and shut the door and I never saw a cat with such a worried look on it's face.

Re: Cats!!!

Try planting lemon balm. It's a herb that smells like lemons. Cats dislike citrus. It's an annual so it will have to re-planted each year but it helped us. We had to flower gardens that our neighbor's cat liked to use as a his personal litter box. After the lemon balm was planted the problem stopped.

Or try what an acquaintance did. He left out a mixture of canned tuna and mineral oil. The cats came for the tuna a few hours later the laxative effect of the mineral oil took effect. The cat owners didn't like the result and took matters in to their own hands. The mineral oil is a simple laxative and will have no long term effects on the cats. But, the owners will definitely NOT like the result of it in their own home. As one poster has said if it's not their cats, then there should be no problem.

My parents had this issue and notified all the neighbors that they were sick of digging up cat droppings, and would be placing live traps out. Any cats that never came home could be found at the local animal shelter. The traps can even be rented from the shelter. A few trapped animals and the problem solved itself.

Animal owners have to take responsibility for their pets. If one of their beloved animals goes missing then they will have to admit there is a problem. You may have bad neighbors for a bit but no real harm will come to the animals.

Around here we have quite a few cats that roam the neighborhood. For me it's not a problem because I live in a rural setting and we don't have a mouse problem.

Re: Cats!!!

You need to make sure you are very diplomatic around neighbors. Worst than an annoying cat are vendictive neighbors, I have heard horror stories abot some people, though I get along great with mine.

I do own cats myself, whlie I can't control their behavior, I can do somethigs to help. One of my neighbors told me that one of my cats pooped in their flowerbed. There are other cats in the area, though there is a chance it is mine. I told him I would clean up any messes that he found. My cats are indoor/outdoor, but mainly indoor. When the weather is nice they spend most of the day outside, but they are pretty much inside at night. I guess the main problem you have is the noise at night, it would bug me too. I would ask them if they wouldn't mind letting their cats inside at night as you are being kept up by cats. If they claim it isn't theres then ask them if they wouldn't mind bringing the cats in to eliminate them as a possible source. If their cats have not been spayed or nutered, then that could be a reason for the calling.

Other than the cat calling, I don't know what else you can really do cats don't poop a whole lot and mine prefer the litter box. Most garderners use cow dung as feteralizer, don't see how that is much different than cat poop and at least cat poop is a lot smaller than dog.

My neighbors now apperciate my cats as they do hunt and kill rodents and snakes, which cause more problems to them and their gardens then a little cat poop here and there.

Good luck on this, it can be a touch subject, try to not be too defensive. When giving someone advice it isn't the advice that can **** people off, but the way we say it.

fresh from the cat's @ss is alot different than cow manure you buy. and, you can be fairly certain there are neighbors who aren't grateful that just about everything that moved is now dead or has left the area.

i've got dogs and a cat and they all stay inside. the dogs can go out when i do. the neighbors feed anything that can find space at the trough. i most certainly do not appreciate the cats they attract.

i love my dogs but they're stupid as ....well, dogs. in their screwed up heads cat pickles are a treat. a disgusting, get away from me treat. they love to chase cats when i open the door too.

not cool, cat people who let their cats roam.

Re: Cats!!!

Maybe it's just me, but Cat poop of any type is about as digusting a odor as I have ever smelled. I put it right up there with dog crap, which is nasty too. Anymore I just shovel it up and throw it back where I know it came from. The dead animals that are deposited on my front lawn from other folks dogs/cats roaming around our sub, is another reason to keep em chained or caged where they live. I love the "it's not my animal" excuse when my garbage is torn up all over the street.

And in Australia there is (rightly) a massive fine for people caught doing that. Cats dumped turn feral and are extremely destructive on wildlife. You should be ashamed of yourself!

Re: Cats!!!

sounds like yer neighbors fall into the category of what i call "idiots", a great majority of the population of the world falls into this category - like people who drive 10 mph below the speed limit on a two lane road with a double line for 20 miles

they know that their cats are the ones giving you a hard time, the just dont care because they also fall into the category of "a**holes" - they have zero respect for others and are selfish, like people who chew with their mouth open, disgusting

go get some whistling bottle rockets, send a couple their way when they are in your yard, they will never come back

Took me a few photos of these 2... The little one is one I pulled out of our dive gear before we used it.
