It is a left hand thread.------On some models the thrust bushing is turned around to become the tool to remove it.

It is a know fact that these lower units are an issue.----No ball or needle bearings in them.-----Not as nice to work on as an OMC 9.9 / 15 lower unit.

You may have bearings in that lower unit. Their was a design change in the later models.

Have seen many ads from folks looking for those lower units or selling a motor that --" just needs a lower unit "------Not one of their best designs.----Have about 4 of those motors myself that need lower units.

I did not say they were good but there are 2 different versions. The design 1 has a bushing and design 2 has bearings. Mercury sells that lower unit brand new for around a $1000. I am also pretty sure that the older bushing can be replaced with the newer bearings.

Yes even a plastic material thrust bearing in them above the pinion.

Thanks much. Just cranked harder knowing i was going the right direction. Half a hernia later she broke loose. Your reply is greatly appreciated.
