Re: Carnival Triumph UGH...

It is a good read, particularly coming from a passenger.

Although there are worst situations that people could have been in, the reality of it was far from the expectations of a cruise, and people will take that situation in different ways; some better than others. It sounded like the fire situation was pretty bad, and the passengers were fortunate that it was contained and extinguished.

We are planning a cruise for next year . . . will be going on one of Disney's new ships.

A newer set of regulations when into effect in 2010 called safe return to port (Safe Return to Port - GL). Basically any new ship started (i.e keel laying) after the implementaton date had to follow this regulation. Basically a fire in one "room" of a ship should not affect other rooms and allow key functions to keep functioning. In the case of this ship, it most likely did not incorporate this requirement. My guess is that most of the diesel generators were workable after the fire, but the electrictal switching equipment was damaged to a point that the power could not be routed anywhere. All ships will have an emergency generator, but that only keeps critical and lifesaving systems up after battery power would run out.

I worked construction project for the newer Disney ships and saw first hand how newer ships have isolated and protected systems to work around a fire event like this. Essentially you have 2 seperate engine rooms with dedicated electrictal switchboards that can provide some level of service if there was a major issue in one of the engine rooms.

Odd that they couldn't cope /handle basic campers sanitation for their health . Put their own health at more risk . Yes we all love our creature comforts .

The ship had a major problem, it didn't sink, and no one was injured or died. If it was easy to fix it probably would have been fixed or things bypassed to get it working but it wasn't fixable. Instead it's being towed to Ala. It will be there tomorrow.
Yes the people are uncomfortable, and probably mad because things are't going perfect for their vacation.
Welcome to the real world folks. **it happens ....... it's called life.

We also all know that the news media always makes anything that happens sound 10 times worse than it actually is.

The folks on board have food and water, maybe not the best food, but not starving either.
