Makes sense despite the frustrating aspect of it all.

Re: Carnival Triumph UGH...

Was just reading about this a little while ago. 6 engines generate power for that beast. 3 bow thrusters, 3 stern thrusters and two screws ... so that musta' been some fire to knock everything out.

I was thinking about it last night wondering why they haven't transferred the passengers off, but when I thought about it there's not a really good way to do so. There are nearly 4,500 people on that boat ... finding available ships, and then doing the transfer would be quite an operation.

I'm kinda' thinking that Carnival is doing the best they can. From what I have been able to figure out they have had supply ships getting out there with food and water, as their storage on-board is completely shot. I'm even kinda' betting that the emergency backup systems are working properly, it's just that the failure was just THAT catastrophic.

It can't possibly take that much electrical power to run the water / sanitation pumps.

The system is much more complex than a water pump. The evaporators alone to make potable water from seawater use tremendous amounts of energy. Domestic systems include air-conditioning, which is the biggest user of all the non-propulsion systems. Remember the vessel supports 5000+ people. If everyone turned on a hairdrier (1500w) in the morning, that alone is 7.5 MW. Think big...

If the picture I found is correct, the Triumph has 4 of them, plus 2 additional 8 Cylinder versions (can't find a picture) of that engine.

Kinda' gross, but to go along with all the complaints about sanitation, if only half of 'em gotta' poo each day - that's still a literal "truck load" of poop that's gotta' get flushed and stowed. No wonder they're strugglin' to keep up.

It's not just water supply, and storage that's an issue with the toilets these ships use. The toilets on these ships depend on vacuum, and allot of it to make the system work.

There's enough suction present in the drain that they advise people not to sit on the throne while flushing, because there have been instances were people get their fannies sucked into the opening of the toilet seat, and ended up getting stuck.

I imagine with out enough power to vacuum all the crap through the lines, the system probably got backed up quickly.

The ship had a major problem, it didn't sink, and no one was injured or died. If it was easy to fix it probably would have been fixed or things bypassed to get it working but it wasn't fixable. Instead it's being towed to Ala. It will be there tomorrow.
Yes the people are uncomfortable, and probably mad because things are't going perfect for their vacation.
Welcome to the real world folks. **it happens ....... it's called life.

We also all know that the news media always makes anything that happens sound 10 times worse than it actually is.

The folks on board have food and water, maybe not the best food, but not starving either.

Again, I am talking water and sewage treatment only.

I can only take an educated guess on the power required just to generate the potable water and pump it 15 stories high and about 1/5 mile long, to operate the black and grey water recovery systems, and treat the system to discharge levels. I asked a few colleagues in passing and we all settled in around 1-2 MW alone to generate and move water through a loaded cruise ship.

I just heard a news story on the radio (local station here in town) about a lady who talked to her dad who's on board the ship. She indicated that he said that the passengers are mostly dealing with it well. She said he was actually laughing some and saying that some elements of it were kinda' fun (sleeping in a tent on deck, I guess). Like Don said, a bummer but not the end of the world.

New problem - It's being reported the tow lines broke. Will this "cruise" ever dock?

And I read that they had 4 tugs on her and she was barely making 4 knots. And that they will not make it mobile by dark, so they can't enter the port . . . Endless.

Edit: Now they are saying she can come into port in the dark.

Just found this too: Carnival delivered a generator and “additional provisions” to the Triumph late Wednesday, providing passengers with hot meals, and a Carnival “care team” had been brought to the port to assist relatives awaiting passengers.

HE HE I have one that size on my screen right now. those are a little smaller then our largest engine we make here. we go up to 16 CYL.

Bubba, this is from a member of the design team for a similar vessel in the same class. It is the proposal numbers for energy consumption. The Aux boiler and fresh water input represents the hot and cold water domestic systems. He told me it was appx 1.0 MW to heat the water. The balance would be 2.9 MW for the water system operation alone. Even a little higher than I estimated. These floating cities use alot of juice!

And serving "onion sandwiches" certainly isn't going to help . . . Onion sandwiches ??? They certainly get a "C'mon man" for that. . .

Re: Carnival Triumph UGH...

From my perspective, the fire was contained and suppressed, there were no injuries, the passengers and vessel arrived in port safely, the crew and staff received high praise from passengers for their efforts, and Carnival was prepared for their arrival, provided options to stay or be bussed home, and offered full refunds and $500 additional funds. Not sure what else could of been done under the circumstances. I think they performed well.

Plus another cruise for free. I agree, and there was a guy on the horn yesterday who was saying he was eating Crab and Lobster. What's the saying? "better than my best day at work." I love being on the water. Hanging out on the deck would've been fun for me no matter what.
