Re: Caribbean Vacation THE END

Hey Swabbie, Welcome back (I think). Glad you had a good time. Thanks for the photos.

Deans Dock had been in bad shape the last time I was there and the break wall was detereorating from storms. Without that dock the island would starve, let alone finding a Presidente (good Dominican beer with a punch). Did you have the pleasure of meeting a couple of my peeps at the dock, locals Baba and Bernard? I had a problem with Debbie, they straightened her.....I should say me...out and we became friends for many years. I have nothing but kind words to say about her. I was selling some lobsters off the dock, close to being deported.

Can you imagine what those islands go thru during storms and hurricanes?

Another spot I enjoyed was Rincon, Puerto Rico, on the west coast. Beautiful beaches and clear water. Lots of English spoken. Many cottages available too.

I miss my homeland so much....

The new break wall is almost finished, all poured concrete. It was totally demolished by hurricane Ike. You could still see signs of the Ike devastation and every building has a new roof especially noticeable on Grand Turk.

Your right about the dock, it's the "hub" of the island. We arrived on Dec. 31st and that was the first time in 10 days that the "government boat" had gone to Grand Turk due to rough water. The shelves in Nellie's grocery were almost bare. Everything has to come on that boat including gas in 5 gal. cans. The plane is small so the boat is the lifeline.

Baba's face looks familiar but not the name, I'm guessing I met him. If it wasn't for Debbie I don't think we would have gone. I asked a million questions and she was very responsive and helpful, she really went out of her way to make us feel welcome.

Here are some pics of Debbie and the break wall.
