I have a curiosity question. I had bought a rebuilt carburetor when I was working on getting the engine running couple of years ago when I first acquired the boat but what in the world would cause this?
I am rebuilding the original so I am not immediately needing this one but I have never seen this.
I purchased the bronze filters for the other one but still want an idea lol

Either someone installed it wrong, or put the spring in wrong or it’s to long or….?

I know originally there should be a spring, but there wasn't one in this carburetor and wouldn't have been enough room anyway. I only thought of a rebuild on this because the engine wouldn't idle at 650 (closest I could get was 900 rpm) and had an irradic drip at idle. I'm hopeful that my rebuild of the old one will get me to the rpm I need for shifting.
I'm working on locating a spring for the bronze filter, but I don't know the dimensions of it, so more investigation is needed.

I might be able to measure one tomorrow at work, I’ll try to make time to check. Regardless, it’s not a mercruiser specific part. Most any parts store should be able to set you up. Just bring them the serial number on the carb body.

Ayuh,.... I believe the filters come in two lengths, 'n the last guy Mashed a long one, in a short hole,....

I'd think you can get a filter, 'n spring at Napa,....

Thanks for both of your inputs 😊.
I do not like those plastic gas carb filters.my 1978 carb filter is s/steel fuel screen...fuel pump is a fiber filter 3inches X 1/5 inches on the fuel pump..
I remove the gasoline when I store it in the fall.. no muck ... fuel looks good.. fuel additive all the time...

That filter was installed by a company that I bought the carburetor from, and I agree with you on not liking them. I just rebuilt my spare carburetor, it has the bronze filter with a spring inside it. My filter is much smaller than the one you have being a 2bbl for a 4 cylinder.
I also have the fuel water seperator.
