Carbon

Is there an additive I can run thru my tank to clean the carbon off the tops
of my pistons. I have a 1996 25hp. Merc.....and I do alot of trolling with it.
Any idea why it (carbon) has a tendency to collect there? also I've recently
started running "sea foam" thru it and it seems to run alot smoother.
The carbon is buggin me though. One more how do I decarbonize the motor?

96 2 stroke? maybe the mixture was being run too rich?

The motor when I bought only had its annitional 20 service on it ....after that and since the I've pretty much baby'd it......so nothings been adjusted.
Maybe it should be looked at after 13 yrs and get a little tune up.
Thought maybe the carbon build up came from trolling alot?
Mixtuer if I'm not mistaken is 50:1

Google up "Dunk Seafoam Decarbon", and you'll come across a couple of posts by Dunk about how to decarbon an engine. I've did it last year, and plan to do it again in about a week.

In a nutshell, pull your fuel line off after the main filter. In a gallon container, mix about 3/4 gal fresh fuel with a can of seafoam. Put the fuel line into your can. Start the engine, and let it run for about 15 minutes. It will smoke like crazy. Turn off the engine for 15 minutes.

Repeat this about three or four times, and you should have removed most of the carbon from your engine. If it still smokes after the third or fourth time, then you might want buy a can of Seafoam Deep Creep, and spray this directly into the carb throat while the engine is idling. Spray until you stall it, let it sit for 10 minutes, and repeat. Do this a couple of times.

I've read that trolling speed really does a job for carbon buildup. You should run it WOT from time to time in order to burn that stuff out.
