Capri 175 with mercruiser 3.0 alpha won’t start

Capri 175 with mercruiser 3.0 alpha won’t start. It’s chugging but it just won’t turn over. What might the reason be and where should I start looking for issues? Brand new boat owner here so pls be nice lol

The starter rotates the engine but it does not start?

If so, is the lanyard switch on? Are you setting the choke and priming the carburetor?

I was pumping the throttle prior to prime and what is lanyard switch?

what is lanyard switch?

Depending on vintage lanyard switch may be on the dash or on the remote assy. Needs to be in place/switched to run for the ignition to be powered

What do you mean by points?

Don't worry, doesn't look like you have them. Have you started the boat before? First step is seeing whether you have spark and fuel. Pull the spark arrestor. See if the choke plate is closed. When you pump the throttle you should see gas squirted down the throat of the carb. You can also pour a bit of gas down the throat of the carb. If fuel related the motor should then at least cough when you try to start it. Can also check for spark with a spark tester.
