Re: Canoe speed

According to Martinlogan's logic you might want to put a fifty horse on there!!!

Re: Canoe speed

I got my outboard today, and i must say that thing is a HE**uva lot bigger than it looks in the brochure. The weight however is still less than that of the trolling motor and batteries. Each of my batteries weighs in at 49lbs. It' appears to be well built, and will be working on running it this weekend. If anyone wants to see pictures of it, let me know. I took some today while i had it mounted on the canoe.. Once again this thing is HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGE. But it does fit, and it does meet/coincide with the boats recommended HP. We'll see, and i will keep everyone informed

Re: Canoe speed

You could hang the outboard off of your tailgate so your girlfriends don't have to ride in the back! Outboard carrier could be fasioned out of a dolly and a 2x6 and you could roll it right up to your truck bed and drag it up and lay it flat in the bed. Canoe, motor, gas tank, gear, outriggers(?).. Trailer???<br /><br />I hope you got the RED one, gotta look the part!

Re: Canoe speed

sweet, i used my plasma cutter, mig welder, and some aluminum, and some 7" pneumatic tires and an old hand truck to make an outboard carrier. anyone have any preferences of which brand of motor oil to use they would like to share?

Re: Canoe speed

ok, on the power topic here,,,,i had a 17' aluminium. put a 3.5 sea gull on the back, and she flew, i made a custom mount to hang off the stern piece, but as was said in a previous reply, i had a 50# weight in the front of the canoe or if i didn't when i reached back to far to start it, the bow rose up and before you can blink the water begins to run over the stern rails and PUFFFFFFFF, down you go........with the weight up forward, it was ok

Re: Canoe speed

HOLY ***t this thing is FAST!!!!! I managed to log about 2hours of running on it today, at half throtttle and below.. This thing really movies... I've got 3-80lb bags of sand in the front of the canoe, and the front still came out of the water like it was nothing..... Not too high, but just right. I did feel somewhat tippy when i was getting passed by larger boats, and i figured i didn't want to see my investment drown, so i went out today and bought http://www.castlecraft.com/stabilizers.htm <br />I got these from pro canoe & kayak here in raleigh.... Well see how well they help tomorrow.. <br />I'm going to take my GPS out tomorrow, so i'll inform you guys of the actual speed at 3/4 and 1/2 throttles.... after i log 5hours, i can run it wide open for a minute, then bring it back down....

Re: Canoe speed

I'm interested in your project.<br /><br />I've got a Grumman Sportboat, which is kind of like a double wide aluminum square stern canoe. with a sweet running little 1976 Johnson 6hp. I found that when I was sitting on the rear seat working the tiller, the boat rode with the bow very high. I could only get about 11 mph out of it. I bought a "Troll-n-buddy" tiller extension that allows me to steer from the middle seat. The gas tank has a long hose and sits up front. I can now get 15 mph. You might find this extension useful on your rig. Here's the link to a suppliers web site. http://www.boatus-store.com/browse/item.asp?IID=17503. Be sure and get the one with the u-joint because in a narrow boat, you can't move sideways far enough to turn with a rigid tiller extension. <br /><br />I should tell you that my boat is kind of a handful in rough water and when turning sharp. It rolls very easily. The motor is powerful enough to bury the lowside gunnel if you turn sharp and give it more than about 3/4 throttle. If you don't get off the throttle or straighten it out quick, you can swamp the boat.<br /><br />You might also check those stabilizers when you get them mounted to be sure they are going to withstand the backwards force that will be generated when the are drug through the water at speed. Those things don't look well braced to withstand the drag forces that they will be subjected to on a fast boat. You might need to rig some bracing lines running forward from the floats to the bow of the boat.<br /><br />Good luck with it. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Re: Canoe speed

They don't drag the water when motoring, the manufacture specifies that they be in the full up position.. they will only make contact in the hull decides to tilt, or if i corner too fast, just like on a sailing rig. I only haul a** going in a straight line, i slow down substantially to corner.. I'm going out in about an hour, i'll post when i return.. This time i taking someone with me, so i an get them to move around while they're up front so i can see how it goes...i.e sitting really close up on the bow..

Re: Canoe speed

Once again i have returned.. Ok, with two people in the boat, Myself being 6'7 308lbs, and my friends being 6' and about 220lbs, 3 gallons of gas, the stabilizers, and ofcourse the outboard weighing 54lbs, the craft went around 11mph using my Garmnin GPS III Plus. this little thing is fast, I can only imagine how fast it'll be when i start going out by myself(i'm waiting on my tiller extension to get here)this speed was measured at about 3/4 throttle. I did manage to get enough hours on the engine for a brief 100% throttle run, but in all honesty i couldn't tell a difference in speed, and by this point i was to busy playing around to use the gps :) the stabilizers work like magic, i can turn on a dime, running 3/4 or better with NO problem. oh.. and the boat weighs about 110lbs
