That's no dog you've got there, that's a bull seal he will probably float higher than your boat due to the added buoyancy of all that blubber.:D

seriously though, i had a dog that was once very over weight due to his medication (Prednisone) he was placed on a strict diet of "Hills Science Diet W/D".
He was back in shape in under two months. Check with your Vet and see if that will work for your dog.

He's been to the vet about his weight. With him having Newfoundland blood in him puts him into the giant breed category. We feed him 24 ounces of dog food every day. When the weather breaks and he spends more time outside, he will drop the weight. I wish he wasn't so afraid of the water as I know this would help him drop his weight and keep it off. One odd thing is that when it is time for a bath, I tell him it is time to take a shower and he will go to the shower stall in the basement. He does like getting a bath. Yeah, I know he's weird, but that is why we love him so much :D

A related question, when your dog jumps off the boat, either intentionally or not, how do you get him back in?

I know they make doggie ramps that mount to the swim platform but they're $350! Is there a cheaper alternative? I suppose I could just build one with marine plywood and carpeting.

There are cheaper doggie ramps out there, but you may not need one. Most canine PFDs I've seen have a handle on top you can grab and pick straight up on. You can almost make out the handle in the picture I posted of TillyDog just above (black fabric kinda laying down on the very top of the yellow PFD). It really works.

Also, when we ordered our boat last year we had them install a swim platform/ladder on the stern just in case. Have yet to use it.

Cool, our dog is not heavy (14lbs) so the handle should be fine.
