You have got to watch out for the pets...what good is a pet vest, stored under the seat, if your dog goes 'overboard'?

I 'lost' Toby off of my jet ski one time...out in the Gulf of Mexico. My GPS...and his orange vest...saved the day!

the more i look at it the more i think this jacket rocky has is like the jacket we like the best.
does it use velcro on the neck and the band that goes around the belly and chest rocky?

TD is that one you got at wallmart one of the outward bound ones or is that what your old one was?

Re: Canine Life Jackets

I think doggie PFDs are a great idea and if I had a dog that went out on the boat, he/she would have one.

I can think of two reasons for a PFD on a dog, even if it is a good swimmer. Just like a human, a dog can be incapacitated. This can be due to an injury resulting from a boat accident, or simply due to exhaustion. Also, a drowning dog could become a danger to human survivor. How many of us would ignore our beloved pet if it was drowning? Perhaps that wouldn't be a big deal if the dog were small, but how about if it is large? Would that dog all of a sudden become a danger to the person trying to rescue it? I think the answer could very easily be, "yes."

I vote for the doggie PFD. I think there are lots of good reasons for them and, if nothing else, they provide peace of mind.

Re: Canine Life Jackets

Summary. Why do people wear PFDs when afloat?

1. Can't swim.
2. Can't swim for miles and miles.
3. Might be injured in getting into the water.
4. They become more visible when in the water.
5. They provide a handle for rescuers to grab.
6. Skipper requires it. (This trumps all "yabuts")

As far as I know, English Bulls are the only breed that genetically just can't swim. All of the other "people" reasons apply to all dogs.

Re: Canine Life Jackets

Our Jack wears one when motoring, but we take it off when we are on shore or on the blind. He's a pure bred yellow lab (red fox color) and can swim for hours. He'll go 200+ yards at a shot, out and back, after a bird. But he's jumped in after something a few times unexpectedly while under way from the bow and we could have easily knocked him on the noggin.

I had a neoprene jacket for hunting that provided warmth more than floatation. I didn't realize the arm holes were a little too small and a day after we got back from a recent hunting trip, I noticed he wasn't his chipper self. My daughter, a budding vet, checked him out and found the skin under his front legs had been rubbed raw. With a little topical intibiotic and talcum powder, he was fine after a few days. So check the fit carefully around the neck and leg openings and make sure it's not too snug around the chest to allow them to breathe properly.

I assume her new companion rates one too (?).
I forgot his name, for some reason Damion is coming to mind.

Toby wears the Outward Hound...and it has both velcro, and straps, at the neck and under the belly. I got mine off of fleaBay...but I will check with WalMart, when he needs another one!

And they're comfortable, too! (This is TillyDog sound asleep on our Lund 1750 Fisherman steaming back to the cabin on Little Jessie Lake in Northern Minnesota. Had too much fun in the sun for one day).

"that goofy animal is like my son(sounds corny)" not corny at all. it would be horrible, if he/she got tired and drowned, knowing you could have put a pfd on he/she.

sure time will cure things, but i would be lost with out Tasha.

Sorry things didn't work out - for you (and Tasha). There can only be one Alpha in the pack though.
Sounds like it worked out pretty good for him though!

Keeper is half Lab-n-Newfoundland. Has the tail, head, and legs of a lab, and the body of a Newfie. We got this dog as a pup thinking he would make the best water dog for us. NOT! If there is a water puddle on the ground, he will walk around it. :D He can swim as he has slipped off the dock before. He just swam to shore and came back to the boat at the dock. He sulked the rest of the day.

I don't have a PFD for him, and I'm not sure if there is one big enough. The lake we boat on is small (from mid lake to shore/200 yds), he has no desire to jump out of the boat (a good point for him not liking water), and he stays in the cabin while we are moving.

If I was in a different lake and circumstances, I would find something that would work. Until then, I feel confident that he won't need one.

That's funny a water dog that doesn't like water. Oh well at least you don't have to worry about a wet floor;)

Re: Canine Life Jackets

Unless there are ones that is not listed, none of those will work for my 175lb fat dog. :D I'll be glad when the weather breaks so I take him on some long walks and get his weight back down (again).....

That's no dog you've got there, that's a bull seal he will probably float higher than your boat due to the added buoyancy of all that blubber.:D

seriously though, i had a dog that was once very over weight due to his medication (Prednisone) he was placed on a strict diet of "Hills Science Diet W/D".
He was back in shape in under two months. Check with your Vet and see if that will work for your dog.
