Hey,
I have an old mercury outboard motor(650) That has a crack in the lower gear case housing part. I found the part i need to replace it but is it possible/feasible to replace the old one? The crack occured this winter when some water got trapped in the gear case is it also possible that other parts inside the gear case are damaged?

I am a new boat owner so i have no experience what so ever with this sort of thing.

Cheers,
Ryan

If water was in the oil side ,yes you could have other damage as the gears and bearings maybe rusted and pitted. Also you will need to reshim everything if you swap internals to a new/used housing.

As Faztbullet stated, yes you can replace the lower case housing. And like he also stated if there was water intrusion then there most likely will be rust. You will only know what rusted once you remove the casing. But you will certainly need as a minimum all knew seals and "O" rings for starters. But if the replacement casing is very old as well, I would replace all the bushings and bearings as well. It is a lot easier to do that now then to run it for a few months and decide to change them later. I also would purchase the manufacturer’s shop manual for the year, model, and specific HP rating of your OB. That way you will see what is in that casing and know all the end-play specs too... But this is done many many times by so many folks yearly. Not that unusual of a project... :D

I don't know how to do any of this so i was going to get Xtreme marine to do it for me. But what other parts am i going to need to fix this problem.
Do i the extra parts i need require me to find the original parts or are they readily available at marine repair shops?
