I have an older 4 horse evinrude. The recoil spring broke about 4 inches from the end. Can I rebend a portion of the spring and use it. See picture. Or do I buy a new one?

If your in a jam or just want to give it try heat it with a torch make the bend and let it cool naturally or stick it in some sand so it cools slowly.

You will need to anneal the end first and then attempt to re-harden and temper it afterwards.
If it failing again could put you in any danger dont risk it , buy a new one.

Many years ago I "repaired" the spring in a car seat belt for a colleague in this way but he swapped to the passenger side where it got relatively little use.
