Can you mix brands of epoxy

Just a thought. Let's say I was using West epoxy and ran out but had a gallon of MAS epoxy.

Are epoxies compatible with each other? I've looked through the forums but couldn't find a match.

Thanks!

I wouldn't mix "PART A" from brand "X" with "PART B" from brand "Y", nor would I combine uncured "X" and "Y"; but I wouldn't worry about it if I used up all my brand "X," let that cure, and then finished up the job with brand "Y."

That's exactly what I meant. Brand A is gone, dry, and ready for a second coat and there is only Brand B left. I agree on mixing Brand A and B together while wet...not a good idea. :)

Just a thought..lets say you were using west..and ran out.. ( Did you start some application using this ? or is it lets say thing ? ).

I/We can assume your laying some glass..but I wont assume..

Are you talking about Wood ? Stringers ? whats the applicaton ??

Your hypo is not telling us anything.. can you apply epoxy on epoxy ? for what ?

Yes and No..depending on the application...

More Info needed here....

You're good! Brand A gone, time to use brand B. Only mix with it's own X.

This thread demonstrates an amazing comand of the alphabet and even brings to mind some of those pesky algebra problems from high school. A+X/Y= possible Hospitalization and Rehab!!!

YD -- Decking is glassed and coated (once) with Brand A epoxy. I would like to apply a couple of more coats of epoxy before... paint/carpet/whatever. Brand A is all gone and the deck has cured. Found Brand B for less $$ so rather than going through the expense of Brand A I would like to use Brand B.

Doesn't matter to me one way or the other, however I have not seen this question on the forum. My guess is a lot of folks out there want to know so I figured I'd pose the question.

Overall, the question is; is epoxy epoxy regardless of the brand? Is there such a thing as the best epoxy or the worst epoxy? Is epoxy like Coke and Pepsi? A matter of preference, or is there is fundamental difference in quality and application like paint--Home Depot vs Benjamin Miller vs Dutch Boy.

This is a good question. I was using uscomposites epoxy and ran out. I found max bond epoxy to be much cheaper but yet to order. Has anyone here used it yet?

I would be careful trying that. Your best bet is to call tech support of Brand Y and see it they will stand behind their product if applied over Brand X.

I am currently working on a project (building, not a boat) where an epoxy paint may have had a negative impact on a structural epoxy. Now, my situation involves epoxies for two completely different uses. However, until now, I had never seen a structural epoxy turn to "goo" after appearing to be cured for months. We are trying to help the owners figure out what happened, but no clear signs yet.

That's good advice. :) I would also suggest trying a small area first, like they tell with carpet cleaners and such. It's easier to fix a small area rather than screw up your whole project.

Max Bond being the stuff that EBAY guy in Ontario, CA is selling?

Yes, I redid my entire deck, sealed wood for seating, and made filler/fairing compound (with silicas, etc.) using the low viscosity Max Bond from that guy, and I highly recommend the product.

There are differences in epoxy ( wonder why Ond didnt chime in..as Im no Scientist :) ) ...

Its all the prep..if you used one system..then..wanted to reprep and goto another resin system .. as long as the cleaning and prep is done ( another reason I dont like epoxy ) then your ok with laying up with your other epoxy ( resins dont know what was there before..just prep it properly and go from there )

Epoxy over Poly is OK.. Poly over Epoxy is ... shunned.. or NOT OK..

Thats the same stuff as envirotex surface finishing polymer sold at Ace hardware stores, not the strongest but good for finish work like decks.
Its used on bars and counter tops.

West marine is top shelf and top price, better to source it cheaper.
I think they use Gudgeon bros.

YD.

I have a book written by a comm chemist on polymers and compounds used in boating, on epoxy he writes the mfgers all use proprietary formulas , there was no sense writing about it because they're all so different.

Theres a local place that mfgers epoxies but you can't even buy it, its all sold under contract to nasa.
Then theres devcon 30 minute epoxy with all the strength of dried chewing gum, and a world of epoxies between the two extremes.

Re: Can you mix brands of epoxy

If Max Bond and Envirotex surface finishing polymer are the same product, then it is polymer and not something one would use over epoxy... if I am reading (YD) this right. Not that I am going out and buying Max Bond...I'm just sayin. :D

Good response and great information!

Thanks everyone!:)

I agree and understand the technical aspects of the study, but think if compare marine epoxy to marine epoxy, MAS vs West for example, or another type sitting next to each other on the shelf, you are probably okay with applying one over the other once one has cured. I don't suggest using a marine epoxy and then running to Home Depot or Pep Boys and use theirs to finish a project. As mentioned as well, one should try the new stuff on a small area first to ensure there are no issues.

Re: Can you mix brands of epoxy

I'm no scientist or chemist, but I'll take a crack it.

Unless its a very oddball epoxy you won't have any problems with a different brand of epoxy bonding to it. Oddball as in a specialty product that you most likely wouldn't be able to buy easily.

As far as mixing different brands (parts A and B)...yes you can...but you need to know the chemistry of each to know if they're compatible, so you?re better off sticking to one brand. Unlike the polyester industry where catalyst suppliers are separate from the resin manufactures, epoxy and the hardener tend to be marketed as a set by the same company, although most epoxies do allow you to use different hardeners for different applications.

What?s odd is that there are also many different catalysts for polyesters and VE?s that can speed up or slow down the cure almost like they have with epoxies, but you rarely see them for sale in the retail market.

None of the retail suppliers make their own epoxy, some are formulated especially for them, but none that I know of make it themselves. There are a few that custom blend their own, but they still buy the bases and just mix it together themselves. And like everything else in life it?s a trade off between quality, performance and cost.

I believe this to be false information in regards to the Max Bond epoxy.

I do not believe this:

Is the same thing as this:
