Can Not get Spark on my Force 85hp

Well I accidently crossed the wires when connecting the battery. Trying to get motor started and it is trying to turn over but I cannot get a spark. Want for the Weekend Can any one Help???

I did not try to start the motor, but did smell electrical burning, and saw smoke coming from motor, but wiring looks fine. Looked over fuses under dash, none blown, is there fuses on the motor itself that could be blown?? Where should I start.

There is a pretty good chance that you fried the rectifier by crossing the battery cables.<br />Motor should run but without a rectifier, it will not charge the battery.<br /><br />The newer 85hp had a circuit breaker, connected to the red wire coming of the rectifier.

The motor I am 99.99% sure is a 1989. It says US Marine on it. Motor is in Great Shape. <br /><br />Would that cause no spark though?? <br /><br />Where is the rectifier located??Is it easy to replace?? How much $$ are we talking??

Rectifier is available at any Mercury dealer for about $33. New part number is FK650450 - I think.<br /><br />It is held in place by 1 or 2 screws. Has 5 wires connected to it. <br /><br />First double check that the safety lanyard switch is in the run position.<br />Check all connections for tightness or broken wires, or missing insulation.<br />Check the wires coming out from under the flywheel to make sure they are still attached and in good condition.

Would this be the same thing as the "Brain Box" or CDI...I have checked with a few dealers and thats what they said it may be. This box has five wires coming off of it with only 4 studs on it.<br /><br />The box is about 2inch wide and 3inch long<br />1 ground wire to the starter<br />1 positive 12v<br />1 to the coil/flywheel<br />1 to a electrical strip<br />1 looks a return wire coming from coil<br /><br />Really do appreciate the Help Thank You

I did the same once on my '89 85 hp but had no smoke. I found a couple of popped breakers on the motor, that was it....lucky for me.<br /><br />Paul
