Can it be My Shift Cable ??????????? HELP!

Hello Everyone. Well this is my story and as the saying goes I am sticking with it =)
I removed my outboard to change all my gaskets, also oved my lower drive unit change impeller and gaskets. I changed the oil everything was working perfectly before I removed the outdrive. When I placed the outdrive back on I am able to move my propeller in neutral, In foward it is geared properly but when I move my throttle to reverse t stays in Neutral as if it does not go into gear. A mechnic came to my house and is telling me I need a shift cable. Can this be true. Reason I am asking is because everything was working perfectly in all my gears before I removed the Outdrive. Suggestions. I am new and I do not want to be taken by surprise and spend an arm and a leg. It is very hard to find a mechanic in Norwalk CT. Most of them are booked for like 3 weeks in advance. If anyone knows of anyone in the area I really would appreciate it.

Engine is an Alpha One Mercruiser 3.0 Gen 1 200 HP.

I did exactly the same thing a couple weeks ago and I have the exact same problem. Though to myself that I might have damaged shift cable. Bought one today so I will let you know. Merc 3.0, 140.

Sometimes when cables are worn, just the fact of taking the drive off and putting it back on will cause problems. You can check the adjustment, and may be able to adjust it to work both ways. If not, then you will need a new cable.

You have a 200 hp 3.0L

let me ask this when you try to put it in reverse do you hear a "ting"noise from down by the out drive? i am running a 88 3.0 alpha 1 m y self and pulled it to do impeller swap when i did engine rebuild after putting it back on i would hear a ting down there. come to findi out my out drive was not in the right gear when i out it back on , here is a link to the thread that helped me fix my issue http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=478480 hope it helps

Have you tried pulling the shift cable barrel out of it's holder near the engine, and then try shifting there by hand? (ie pulling and pushing the cable as far as it goes)

You have a 200 hp 3.0L????i want to know who built that motor....i will go through the trouble and swap mine out for it

The 3.0 200hp was by Mercruiser. I have not tried pulling the shift cable.

The 3.0 200hp was by Mercruiser.

Mercruiser has NEVER had a 200 hp 3.0L engine. Mercury outboards do, but you say you have a Mercruiser, so which is it?
You either have a Mercruiser 3.0L engine of 130 to 140 hp, or a 3.0L 200 hp Mercury Outboard.

All I know I have a Mercruiser i/o and the motor on top has 3.0 200.

I am going to see the motor serial number and call Mercruiser on Monday to verify. I might be fooled.

Post your serial number here, I can look it up for you, that's not a problem.
Who knows, maybe the previous owner was playing with decals. Mercruiser has never had a 3.0L, 4 cylinder engine with 200 hp.

Just found out it is a V8 260HP Mercruiser

Your best bet is to find a qualified marine shop to fix your boat. If you don't know the difference between a 4 cyl and a V8 by looking at it, you sure can't fix it.

Don just wondering what made you believe I ever mentioned 4 cyl. Ok well on the other hand this forum is for experienced users and for the Novice searching for advise and willing to take a risk and fix their own boat. I am willing to learn and fix my own boat and I use this source for learning so please in the future if someone asks for your help my friend do not insult them stating they cant fix it.

Well just to close the thread I was able to resolve the issue by changing my Shift cable and Gear Shaft that was bent. Thank you all for the support and assistance.

Your original Post.....Mercruiser 3.0=4 cylinder. That's most likely where Don got the idea.

I would defiantly recommend following this advice.
