Can I install a newer outdrive?

System went as we were cruising along at 3000 rpm, barely a little “cruump”. Now it doesn’t spin in forward gear at all and moves a bit in reverse, with a click.
It locked up and that's why the yoke snapped.

The lower end still shifts nicely into forward and reverse. What is the likelihood of damage in the lower end, when the top end failed? Could I check this by removing lower end and shifting into reverse and forward to see how it performs?

If you think the problem is limited to top end, pull the top cap off the top end and look at the gears. Find out why you broke an input shaft and everyone will then know whether the problem is also in the lower end.

Agreed, just need to be careful of metal getting into lower. Ideally you would disassemble both. I money is no issue go buy an SEI complete drive and go boating instead of wrenching .

I found a real nice leg (virtually free!) from a group Of Double Eagle owners I’m part of. I am in the process of going over it and servicing all of it. New impeller, check the water pump, checking all bearings, seals, etc. Would this type of unit work to pressure test the leg?

Looks like it goes to 14 lbs so that should work fine.
Here's a link from the stickies.

All right, well we got it all back together. Found an MC Dash one drive that was only a few thousand off, with serial number, and in excellent shape for pretty much nothing. Replaced water pump, impeller, shift shaft bushing. Greased all u-joints, pressure tested. Good oil flush, new oil. Now gonna put it back on and see if the coupler survived.

Well, put the leg in, tested it and CAN’T believe the coupler survived!

Well, put the leg in, tested it and CAN’T believe the coupler survived! And the reward!
