The 60/80/90's were Renault engines I'm guessing by being very different than the 110/120/140. The 110/120 should be the Chevy 4cyl

Renault motors were used until 1972. A version of GM based 120's, not Chevy, motors were also used until 1972.

We don't know what motor is in this boat as the Renault and GM motors were used in the same years. Since Lee thinks this is a 1964 model boat, it could have a Renault 90 or a 110/120 GM 153 CI. Lee, can you get a picture of the motor and the serial number?

110/ 120hp GM for sure, but with the exhaust riser looking like THAT, your looking at a repower I think. Risers are available but not cheap. the engine is likely locked up tight..

You could get a 2.5 or 3.0L Mercruiser R/MR/ Alpha 1 gen 1 pretty cheap out of a rotted donor boat which is pretty much a bolt in swap. Nobody has to know it's different except you. They look pretty much the same.

Matt167. Ya she is locked up. I'm thinking of having some fun with this build. Do you know the compression it could have? I'm thinking of making a turbo for it during the rebuild hahah

Ok gents. Its been along time and I still have the boat. Doing a complete rebuild. Today I picked up a mercruser Blackman v200 outboard setup. With a transom swap I'd gain deck space correct and shed some pounds? The v200 is 497lbs dry.

Missed this back in 2019. Did you figure out the model? Looks like it might be the Monterey. I'm not expert on 'em, but I'm a fan of the Catalina. Ray Loewy did the design for that boat, and I'm a fan of his industrial design.

I believe it is a catalina class. 19.5ft 120GM now being swapped out to outboard. Just trying to figure out what I'm going to do to the transom to hold it

Ya. I was thinking of it this way. I know she has the power so I can get out of a tricky situation and only run her half way...

Unlike cars, boats don't just grab the extra horse power and go faster. The fluid influence of water changes how horse power effect things. Hulls are designed for speed ranges, not necessarily meaning you can't overpower them. Instead adding power can have anywhere between little effect at all (because the hull just doesn't have the design to do anything in the water) all the way to turning a hydrodynamic into a ballistic (the hull just gets on top of the water and starts flying).

Again, I don't know what would happen. Just bear that all in mind for safety.

19.5' would make this a San Juan. The Monterey was about 17' and last produced in 1958, renamed Catalina for 1959. Raymond Lowey did NOT design ANY Dorsett boats, but did do the styling for 1959 & 1960 Dorsett boats.
