I have a 5hp 2 stroke mercury. I changed impeller, and prop seal. After putting back together I can’t get lower unit to shift right. When I push shift rod all the way in lower unit it’s in neutral, not reverse. Then pull up to neutral position it’s in gear and when I pull all way out. I can’t for the life of me figure out what I’ve done wrong, or what’s changed. It was working before I disassembled it. Can someone please help. I can’t find a local shop that works on small mercurys any longer. Thanks!!

I would remove propshaft.-----Push shift rod all the way in.-----Re-install propshaft.-----There will be spring pressure to deal with.-----Then adjust shift rod and test again.

I just tried that again. It’s like the gear dog is not going far enough to catch the reverse gear. I’m going to attach a couple pics of prop gear , and cam follower. Should there be something else behind the cam follower to make it engage? If I look down shaft toward gear dog I see the shear pin that holds dog in place. Should there be something small that sits on that that the cam follower slides in shaft against?

The parts diagram shows a part ( clutch spring retainer item #27 ) not sure where is goes.----You might look for it in your motor in your parts cleaner or on your shop floor.

Am I missing this part? Part number 46 that looks like goes in before pushrod/cam follower?

I’ve looked everywhere. I can’t find it or find a parts list for it to purchase one.

I see that item marked as #26 or #27 on my diagram.------It may in fact be trapped in the assembly on the end of the spring and it can not fall out.----Be easy for me to check this out.

So the retainer can’t fall out?

Well----I have worked on many motors.----But not your particular motor.--- If it worked fine for you before the work it should be easy to inspect / re-assemble.----I can not see , hear or feel your motor.---Nissan / Tohatsu may well be the same motor as the Mercury you have.------Sorry.

Yes sir. I understand. I’ve replaced water pump on several, but first prop seal where I had to pull shaft out to change. Originally when I took it apart the push rod fell into housing. I took it out and cleaned. I was draining remainder of the oil, and maybe the small retainer came out. I don’t know. I took the whole thing with prop shaft out to my local mercury dealer to get seal. They had it out in store, and if there’s a retainer that’s loose, could had fallen out as several of the guys were looking for number on existing seal. My ignorance on this, I’m sure caused it. It has to be simple fix, I just don’t know what parts are suppose to be there. I took it to 3 local marine shops today and no one can tell me. Hard to find anyone that will work on them. I was hoping someone on here, would say yes there is a small spacer between push rod and split pin in shaft. I appreciate all your help, sir! I considered putting a small nut in the shaft for spacer just to see if it would work right. But of course I wouldn’t run it like that.
