Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Wow, its cool to see there's a few of you who frequent lake mead. Im just getting back into the fishing game and am almost done with my refurbishing. After that I Hope to begin learning some hot spots for striper.. I've still never caught one but have friends who have caught monsters. Cant wait to share stores with you all. If anyone is ever looking for a fishing partner/buddy let me know. I would love to learn some new things. Im not a newbie, but still have lots to learn. Other than that, you may see me in a blue and white four winns freedom 160, wakeboarding in the middle of the lake outside of hemmenway. Summers here, I'll see you all out there.

Hi motor boater, nice to meet you.
I almost always launch out of calville bay then head toward swallow bay.see you around there sometime, and we can fish togeather after your done shreading the water on that wakeboard.

I will bro, be careful out there on that boat.
Lake Mead is awesome, but the wind makes it very dangerous bro,5 to 15 is ok but beyond that your playing with fire as a new boater bro!
And get to know your boat every inch and wire, in case something goes wrong and the winds blowing you toward the rocks, you can adjust quickly!I will see you there and if you have any questions?? im always here for you, as well as the other iboats captains

WEAR YOU LIFE JACKETS ANYTIME THE BOAT IS UNDER POWER!!!!!

I HAVE BEEN AT THE LAUNCH RAMP TWICE THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AS PEOPLE HAVE CRIED OVER LOSING THERE LOVED ONES TO BAD CALLS AND DROWNING,A CRY THAT WAKES ME UP AT NIGHT STILL.

What do you mean 5 to 15? HP??? And I sure will be safe, ive already had a close call in my 16' four winns the first time I had her in the water due to the wind and the massive swells... Scary stuff, almost lost her. but as far as the fishing boat "MB" I do have plenty of vests, a floating radio to call for help if needed, fire extinguisher and now just need a small bilge pump.

He means 5 to 15 MPH wind. Take that warning seriously. In the Summer the wind blows out of the south almost every afternoon and the north shore (Calville) get hit hard. Going with the wind waves in can be OK if you learn how to time them, but you have to know, and read through here, we discuss it often, you can go from glass to life threatening in 10 minutes on Mead. Get a big bilge pump ;)

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Was out several weeks ago in 37mph wind gusts, when the winds kicked up, i headed back. I was doing fine have a fairly large stable vessel. However to be safe I connected my kill switch lanyard to my life jacket...of course I turned around to look behind me and pulled the lanyard. Engine died..I chuckled then while reconnecting the clip it broke in two! Uh-oh! I have about three minutes before the winds smash me into the rocks, so I hold the button in with my hand while I try to keep her on course, kill switch is in really awful place, no way I can dock like this. I look around and see my fishing net nearby and wedge it under my foot and depressing the switch...made it back...but it was a tough time.
Mead can be a really dangerous lake, I love and respect her.

have the T-shirt.....
I think I have three or four from Mead, and one from Havasu. Dang it is crazy when it happens.

MB said "get a small bilge pump", so that's where I was coming from. Totally agree about two.

Only way to deal with Mead.

I will add that early season seems for me to be more variable. Especially high prevailing winds as opposed to the Monsoonal stuff. Later in the summer when the prevailing winds seem a little softer, the Monsoons are more likely. She'll get you one way or the other.

Hello everyone, just typed in "lake mead forum" and this popped up. I'm local to the area and launched out of Callville last year. This season we are getting a slip at Callville. Should be putting her in in around 2 weeks. Black 34' Scarab III. If anyone ever see it yell out JEYSSON and say from Iboats. We usually go to sandy cove after hitting the narrows. Let's meet up and enjoy this wonderful lake.

LOL, we were out 2-3 weeks ago, first weekend into the 80's and the kiddies wanted to go swimming, and they did, in 55-60* water

MB said "get a small bilge pump", so that's where I was coming from. Totally agree about two.

Gotcha, missed the "small" bilge pump part. From past experience, a small bilge pump could be useless at Mead/Mohave if caught out in the nasty stuff. I have 2- 800 GPH pumps on my boat, and really wished I had gone with a 1500 GPH for the second pump. (I'm a fishing nut though,,, and go out into gnarly conditions...) I was talking to a bass guy out there, with one of those low-slung "bass rockets", and he said there were 3 bilge pumps on his rig, and that he's needed all of them

Alright I give up. What t-shirt :embarassed:

See pic's on page 68 (hint, wet T-shirt)

Actually, it's just a saying, blah, blah, this and that, have the T-shirt to prove it, type of thing

Wow, im glad im hearing you all talk about the crazy winds on mead. I never knew it was that bad. Kinda scary seeing as though I will mostly be in a small 12 1/2' fishing boat... guess I will start looking for a big bilge pump instead. We should all get together at a cove sometime this summer and have a little/big bbq or something. Bring the family, we can all meet and have a good time.. Any takers? We can communicate and set this up through this forum.

Definitely! I'll take my little 14' jon boat on Mead, but only the protected coves around Echo or other protected waters. One good thing about small boats though, you can pull them up on the beach, (if there's beach)..

Long before I knew any better, (early 90's) my dad and I took one of those little tinny rental boats out of Echo for a day, all the way up to Fish Island directly across from Overton Beach Marina, then back to Echo. An easy 20 mile round trip

#1 - lucky the weather was perfect
#2 - lucky we didn't run out of fuel

Of course it could have gone far worse...

CALLING ALL LAKE MEAD BOATERS IS ALIVE AGAIN!!!! IM SO GLAD!!!

BUT SERIOUSLY BOATERS,ALL THIS TALK ABOUT WINDS AND BILDGE PUMPS IS FOR REAL.

IF YOUR NEW TO BOATING,THESE ARE SERIOUS THINGS.
AND EVEN AFTER

SOME OF YOU NEWBYS HAVE PROBALLY TAKEN THE NDOW TEST FOR BOATING THAT TALKS ABOUT NORMAL BOATING RIGHT OF WAYS AND LIGHTS AND THINGS BUT IT WONT TELL YOU THIS!!

IM NOT TRYING TO BE A KNOW IT ALL, OR A TOLD YOU SO, BUT THERES THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT ARENT IN THE TEST..

FOR EXAMPLE::: YOUR ON THE LAKE IN 15MPH WINDS AND RELAXING IN A BAY,AS YOUR FRIEND DECIDES TO TAKE A SWIM AND COOL OFF,AS YOUR BOAT IS JUST FLAOTING NOT UNDER POWER OF COURSE HE JUMPS OFF THE STERN.

THEN JUST BECAUSE HES DRUNK OR MACHO OFF A ICE COLD COKE AND HES WORKED OUT HIS WHOLE LIFE HE DECIDES TO SWIM TO A NEARBY UNDER ROCK OR ISLAND OFF SORTS.aS HE GETS HALF WAY THERE,YOUR PUTTING STUFF AWAY IN YOUR BOAT AND MAKING THINGS TIGHTY AS YOU HEAR A CRY FOR HELP!!! AS YOU LOOK UP YOU SEE THATS HES HAVING PROBLEMS.

NOW AS A CAPTAIN OF YOUR VESSEL THIS IS WHERE CRUCIAL DECISIONS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT.

REMEMBER AS HE JUMPED OFF HE HAD NO LIFE JACKET ON,AND THE BOAT POSITION WAS ???,BECAUSE OF THE WINDS THIS IS TRICKY.

NOW IN THIS SCENERIO REAL TIME, YOU WOULD JUST JUMP IN AND GO SAVE YOUR FRIEND RIGHT??

AS YOUR LIFE JACKET SITS UNDER THE SEAT SAFE N SOUND.

CORRECT ACTIONS ARE IMPORTANT HERE,,LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU ALL WOULD DO??????

I HOPE I TYPED THIS ALL CORRECTLY SO YOU WILL UNDERSTAND..

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I saw the weirdest thing at Willow Beach last trip, a BEAVER! (No not that kind ) I caught it out of the corner of my eye, zipped over by it, and it dove down. Remembering the "gator shows" I saw the bubble trail and watched for it to pop back up again, sure enough, a beaver. Who would have thought they have those things down there, probably an invasive species :D

Come to think of it, my son and I saw several trees that looked like they were gnawed on by beavers a couple miles north of Cottonwood Cove, years ago.

I was working in Lauglin years ago and one of the the guys working there from PHX brought his bass boat one week. A few of us were out fishing south of the casinos and I saw what I thought was a yellow lab smimming along the shore. I pointed it out and the local on the boat said "no, it's a beaver". He's also seen wild boars in the water at Topock.

I can beat that. I have proof. This is a beaver at the Nautical Inn, Havasu:

Yes I know it's Havasu, but it is an actual Beaver. No I mean the actual animal, the Dam building type.

I've also seen them below Parker. I always thought these guys got ripped off. Here they are on this big ole River. Thinking "this is perfect" until they try to build a dam on it. I think Beavers are really cool, but they are just over matched . . . :(
