Bung does not fit snug

I just bought a new bung for my boat and it doesn't seem to fit snugly. I have a 1" bung hole therefore I got the 1" plug and it seems to come out easier than it should... Should I be concerned? Can I do anything about this (perhaps make the fit more snug with tape... idk...)?

Thanks for your advice and tips.

Is there a nut on the back of the plug? I know some of them you can tighten it a bit and the plug will get thicker in diameter..

flip the handle straight out, give a few turns, then flip it back.

I would also leave the handle pointed up so the water running under the boat doesn't flip it open. Don't those type of plugs go in from the inside?

+1
The second Photo shows you inserting the plug in the locked position.
Flip the Ring Handle Horizontal, Insert in the hole, Screw the Ring Clockwise until it is slightly snug, then flip the handle vertical. It is easy to make it WAY Too Tight. Adjust as needed.
Do not install it with the handle pointing DOWN, It is better to install it from the inside if it is reachable.

Had a similar problem, the bung itself was cracked/broken inside the hole, had to be replaced.

The second photo was meant to show that I could remove the plug while it was supposed to be locked. I did insert it "opened" however.

I will leave it pointed up, in fact that was almost a question I was going to pose but I figured the water would push it out (especially if it fit loosely in there).

I would think just from water dynamics that if you plug it from the inside that the water would be pushing on it trying to push it out the whole time (sitting / running). But if it were plugged from the outside the pressure on the water trying to come in the hole would help keep the plug in place. I know nothing about this though and I didn't even consider putting it in from the inside. I bet I can reach, I will look into this. I will keep one inside with me too in case this one falls out while I am cruising.

That is scary. I hope this isn't the case for me. I will take a better look here in a few minutes. Thank you for the idea though.

I am going to try some of these ideas just after my shower. I just got home from work. I hope to get the boat out on the water this weekend and I thank all of you for your help.

Pull the handle of the plug straight out and turn it clockwise until it just starts to snug up inside the bung. Then push the handle down (it's on a cam) and it will tighten the plug even more. Put the plug in so the handle is UP.

Thank you. I assume I want it pretty snug in there too, right? I'm on my way to go do this now. Thank you ALL for your advice!!!

Tried to post a pic but the pic is too large. I got the problem fixed though. Just had to spin the brass end clockwise and the plug ran down the screw some enlarging the plug.

Thanks a ton, folks. I appreciate the help. With any luck I will be on the water this weekend!

Honestly, If I had to plug my bung from the outside, I would buy the one with the T handle and not the lever. I can think of 50 ways for that sucker to open at the wrong time and place.

Just put the handle up when you install it, it won't come out if it's tight enough. Tie a heavy string to the plug so it can't get away, and keep a spare in the boat.

I can get a T one as well. I prefer the clamp down one though because it seemed that the T doesn't get as snug. I can't pull the plug out anymore the way I have it set in there so I am guessing with the water pressure holding it in there even cruising won't make it come out. I will keep a backup just in case. Now to change the oil, fuel filters and check behind the prop and I will be ready to put 'er in the water.

The problem is with something snagging the handle and pulling it. If the handle was down, there is a high probability of that happening eventually; having the handle up greatly reduces this possibility.

The static water pressure involved is insignificant ...
