I'm looking to build a tackle drawer unit like the one pictured below. I've not the first clue where to start.

My current thinking is I need to figure out hinges, sliders, how to cut/glue the parts, what I should use for material for parts, how to insert the latch.

Anyone have some advice on where to start?

You are looking at some serious money to buy components that will last. And starboard may be easy to work with, but it isn't so easy to work with and keep it looking good.

Might as well bite the bullet and spend the $775.49 they are asking for the one in the picture. Gulp.

I made these doors and frames with PVC sheet goods from the big box store. I also enclosed the gunnels that you see open in the picture with the same material. I went with stainless piano hinges and the same latch that you're showing , but in white. Fairly cheap and clean up well. The only problem with PVC vs Starboard is the cut edges are porous and stain rather easily. My thought was (if it became a problem) I would paint it with and epoxy paint.

starboard cnc routed is how they make the tackle centers are places like teak isle.

I would look at the surplus folks like great lakes skipper or marine surplus and buy one.

I am in Canada and have had a horrible time trying to find anything in Canada. If I was in the US I would have no issue at all. I wonder if it is cheaper to import it from the US than to build it.

Those look great, for PVC, where did you find sheets? Rona/Home Depot stores or a more specialized store?

Buying one would be best if you plan on using the same materials as they do. Make a material list and price it out. Starboard 4x8x3/4' sheet is well over $500 last time I looked. Plus stainless drawer slides, etc. If you decide to build it yoursel, common woodworking tools and knowledge are needed

You can likely buy the plastic lure holders at a department store. You can also likely find some plastic drawers as well. 1/4" luan plywood can make the horizontal partitions, and 3/8 Luan plywood for the "carcass". Some good spar urethane to seal the plywood and brass, bronze, chrome plated brass or SS hardware will work. It will be a retro look, but will come in at less that $100, I would think. Just an alternative.....

Yeah that is the site the images are from. I wasn't sure if we could link here so I pasted in some images.

They are US based and I was hoping to buy from a Canadian location to not deal with international shipping as that always seems crazy expensive. I don't think I have ever ordered something from the US and not had the displayed price double after exchange rate and shipping.

Plus it seemed like a fun project and would let me make a few more custom ones for places I can't seem to find any that are made to fit.

Yeah that was the worry is building it is going to be a lot more expensive than buying it. Pricing it out, seems like the cost is just about inline for buy vs build it so a matter of if I want to learn or not.

If you dig into the manufacturers website, they have full schematics and drawings with dimensions (if you want to see how theyre built)
