Running wot at the lake out of know where rpms spike and loose forward momentum. I knew something broke in the LU. I took LU apart after getting home and the vertical shaft sheared at the gear. My problem is there's nothing to grab the shaft with to remove the bolt as its broken inside the gear. The bolt and remaining shaft will separate but the gear won't Ho up enough to remove the bolt. Any ideas?? Thanks!!!

Re: Broken vertical drive shaft

Not quite clearly explained, but it should be no big problem getting the pinion off the remaining shaft.
Shift the gear into forward, put the wrench on the pinion nut, 'lock' the prop shaft and loosen the nut.
Shift into neutral. Put a piece/wedge between the driveshaft thread and top of the clutch-dog - give the prop shaft a short knock UP and the remaining driveshaft piece should be clear of the pinion.

The pinion gear is still in the lower unit. I can't get it out to separate the two.

I can't get the pinion gear not to spin. I have pics but can't figure out how to post them.

Re: Broken vertical drive shaft

Vertical drive shaft snapped inside the pinion gear. I can't lift the pinion high enough to get the remaining 1/2 inch of shaft out or the bolt off.
Please help.

Re: Broken vertical drive shaft

If the pinion nut is still on the remains of the vertical shaft, do as I stated above. If shifted into forward gear, it will 'lock' the pinion and forward gear to the prop-shaft through the clutch dog. By 'locking', put the prop on the shaft and a 2 x 4 between blade and cavitation plate, unscrew the nut. You may up-load the pics anywhere (photobucket or similar), make the link 'shared' and post the link here.
