brass plated screws?????????

I have noticed that some screws, nuts, etc. are brass plated - or plated with something that appears to be brass.

I bought a small screw for my magneto assembly. They actually sent me a bolt - I can't use this. I found a solid brass screw at a hardware store that will work. Can I use this? Will it alter the magnetic properties????

Brass is non-conductive. A magnet won't pick it up if you drop it.

Yeah are you sure that the stock screw that was there was brass?

It was probably stainless or coated.

Exactly WHAT screw in the magneto are you trying to replace? In most cases, brass will work--if the strength isn't a factor.

BTW, in the older days, those steel screws were cadmium plated----obsoleted now for environmental and health reasons. Replaced with zinc-chromated steel screws, which are the norm at the local hardware store.
