Brand New Boat... no title

Here's an absurd story but it is really happening...

I just bought a new 2012 Lund fishing boat. Had it about a week. I live in a town that is right on a state border. I bought the boat new from a dealer in one state while I live in another state even though we are only 20 miles or so apart. When I left the dealership with the boat, I thought I had, and was assured by the dealer that all the paperwork that they had given me would be enough to title the boat in my state at any local vehicle license place in my state.

Guess what.... I can't get the boat titled, registered, etc in my name with the paperwork I have. The dealer insists they have done all they are going to do. The vehicle license offices I have been to (yes I went to more than one to make sure) say they won't register it without a certain title application signed by the dealer. The dealer won't sign it stating they don't sign out of state forms.

What to do? I think I'm out of options. I can't use the boat in another 5 days because my state only gives you 15 total days to register a boat from out of state.

I'm thinking I'm just going to take the boat back to the dealer and say.....here ya go! Anyone else have an idea?

Tell them to sign the in-state form and then you transfer it later.

The only problem with that is that I don't have an address in that state that I could use to register it to not to mention I doubt it's legal for me to register a boat in a state in which I don't reside.

Can you get a PO box? Have you asked the sellers state authority how to handle this? Surely they can assist...or persuade the dealership.

The out-of-state boat title or, if there is a lien holder, a photocopy of the out-of-state title. If you don’t have your out-of-state title, contact a
vehicle/boat licensing office
for instructions on how to apply.

Sounds like they should be able to help with an original title.

If not do you know someone (you trust) that lives in the other state? Use their address. Change it when you re title it.

You are right... they *should* be able to help me. They being the licesning offices. Both offices I went to want a title application signed by the dealer. The dealer won't sign it. The dealer's stance is that they don't have to sign that since they provided me one from another state..... whole thing is stupid!

I may try to get a PO, I need to check and see if you can provide only a PO and register in that state. If that state will allow a registration with only a PO box then that would solve the problem. I do not have an addy I can use over there.

Yes, you do. Your name in care of the dealer name/address. And if he won't do that he has no business selling to an out of stater.

Did you finance or pay cash?

The boat being new should have a certificate of origin . . . you will be getting the first title to the boat. Do you have the certificate of origin? That may be the issue, if the dealer did not provide it.

Yes, have 3 of em actually (boat, motor, and trailer) The issue is the lack of a title application for my state signed by the dealer.

The part that really chaps me is this a dealer who is on a state line... you'd think they'd know this crap.

Ok calm down everyone. Did the dealer sigh the MSO over to you? If so you do not need the dealer to sign your state form. My wife and I title RV's in Washington for people every now and then as part of a finance business we have. As long as the MSO is signed to you with the dealer singing off on it you have no problem getting a Washington title. I think maybe they forgot to sign the MSO. That happens quite often. If that is the problem they will sign it over to you properly or THEY can get into trouble with their DNR or DMV. I sugust you look at that or have a local dealer look at what you have and give advice to you. If you ask nicely most will help.

Best advice I have seen.

2nd best idea is to use the dealers address.

If this is an authorized Lund dealer I would get with Lund and let them know wht the dealer is doing, the manufactureres really don't like it when dealers do dumb things like this becauise it round aboutly makes Lund look bad and the manufaturer does have quite alot of pull with othe dealers

certainly wouldn't be in any hurry to give this schmuck anymore buisness and woudl do all I could to steer others away from him, sounds like "I got your money and now I am done with you" a good ealer should do anyhting they can to get you on the water, signing a paper seems pretty simple.

I see your lazy dealer story and raise you my dishonest dealer story (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=546423) :D

Seriously, though, what is it with these people? Why go into business if you're not prepared to deal with customers and their needs? Sheesh...

Hope you get a quick resolution.

Re: Brand New Boat... no title

Thanks everyone. I was able to get the boat licensed in the state where I do not reside but the dealer does. It only took 3 days of arguing with government clerks but it's done. I would have preferred to have it licensed in the state where I live but this will work. To answer everyone's latest questions...

Yes, the dealer provided me everything they should have. This problem turns out to be government contracted clerks in a particular office feeling that they are very powerful, and at the same time, not very well educated or informed on the process they are supposed to be executing.

The dealer is an authorized Lund dealer but I did not contact Lund now that I know the problem is just a couple of morons at some govt office. I actually spoke to the owner of the dealership last night and he was very upset about the problem too. Apparently it's not the first time they have heard this story about this specific licensing office. Needless to say, he made it right and I'm licensed and ready to fish.

Thanks to all for your help and support.

Now once you have all the official paper work, if you don't already, take it to your home state office and re title it. You will be good to go.

Congrats and go fishing.

Re: Brand New Boat... no title

NC uses contract licensing agencies. I had a problem getting different stories each time I called about or went in to register a boat from FL. I finally asked for a supervisor, and asked for the number of the reg that provided their guidance. She showed me the reg (which I noted pertinent parts) and obtained the proper documentation. The next time, when the clerk said I didn't have this or that, I quoted her the reg and asked for a supervisor. I was polite but firm and got it registered after reminding her she provided me with the reg guidance. You did ask to speak to a supervisor ... right? ;)
