Dilemma...

Have been experimenting with braided line this year. I have puttn it on my heavier musky rods. 30lb. test with a ten lb diameter. Can put more yards on.

Used the same knot i have been for years..Had two tie breaks..Lost an Ernie and a grandma(30$)..Caught a 36" on my trilene line(not Braided) I am thinking that the braid is so thin the line is slipping even with the ole reliable knots..Curious of you who use braided line and if you do a different tie??

Re: Braided Line

when It was legal to snag salmon I used to have knot trouble until some guy showed me how he tied knots, Just double the line over before you thread the hook or lure and tie your knots using the doubled line. They seem to hold a whole lot better and are much stronger.

Re: Braided Line

I've used several different braided superlines, GF. They differ a lot in performance.

Best abrasion resistance seems to be Power Pro, best casting distance Fenwick Iron Thread (don't see that around anymore). Cabelas RipCord SI is a good all-round line.

I use the Uni-knot exclusively and never had it slip. I do double the line to tie on the 100lb titanium leader when I want to toss the big lumber.

Had too many toothy monsters roll up in mono and bite it off. Much harder to do with Power Pro.

Good luck, and take no prisoners. :)

Re: Braided Line

On braided line the "double polymer" knot works excellent and will not slip.

All that is involved to make a double polymer
knot is one extra overhand knot before dropping
through the loop.

2nd knot the " double surgeons" knot is an
excellent knot and will will not slip as well
on braided line.

4 casting, I don't like the way braided casts
or re-spools at all. is sure strong though...
hooked a med. pike 2yrs ago on a drop-off and
he wedged himself between 2 rocks, drag screamed
like mad and almost got to end of spool b4 cuz hit
reverse. once we got back over where he was, he
came outa rocks and was landed, cept he had serious
rock-rash on both sides. convinced pole woulda broke
in half b4 the 30lb spider wire...

Re: Braided Line

I used some braided line for a short time. I used the improved fisherman's knot with no problems. I did, however, have numerous problems with it when casting. It would get all "loopty-loop" and wind around its self. Did that on almost every cast. I got P.O.'d and stripped it off the reel and re-spooled with mono.

Re: Braided Line

The UNI and Sturgeons knot I have not tried. The Polymer has done me well to this point..I really like the braided line becuase of being able to put alot more on my 6000...

Termocline was at 25ft..Line count at 150 feet back and trolling with some hefty lumber 6-12" lures..I know there is line stretch involved here but the line was frayed when it came back..

What hurts is losing 30$ two very lucky muskies

Rwise..I thought about it but fish have an accute sense of smell and have been told it releases chemicals and is a turn off on the fins..

JB..As with you my arm just can't cast like the good ole days so i do 90% trolling...Quick release holders sure are great..Is the rip cord good for the type of fishing we like to do ?

You just ain't right MY...At least my battle with that killer tree was heroic..Someone diving head first into 2 foot of water for a pole which was still in the boat goes in a different category. What the word I am trying to say here here.. :D

Re: Braided Line

I too have found that these lines differ a lot. My buddies and I have tried only a few brands but have only been happy with Tuf-Line. The other brands have all had a problem with breaking when you really wouldn't think they would. Anyway, we use two knots and have never had a problem with either. The double improved clinch and the palomar. Here's a link to instructions for tying them. http://www.salmonuniversity.com/ol_knots.html
We catch 200+ pound sturgeon on 65 or 80 pound Tuf-Line and salmon on the 30 pound with no problems using either of those knots.

Re: Braided Line

Ive used some braided line, but It isnt very good on spinning reels. I was having trouble getting a solid hook set when fishing 4" Plastic worms weightles with a meadium action rod, I switched to 12# Braided and problem solved. I really do not like the way it casts, but at least Im hooking the fish I used to miss. Its VERY sensitive when I fish Jigs, and great for pitching and flipping. I use a polymer Knot.

Re: Braided Line

I like using the braided lines but have become partial to spiderwire fusion. I find them to lay on the spool more evenly than mono without getting pinched and a lot less coil from line memory.

As far as making the line indescreet as possible, I tie an 18-24 inch mono (berkely Vanish) leader
between the braided line and the lure.

Kevin

Re: Braided Line

A majority of line on most reels is never used and unless rotated it often goes to waste during replacement.

Another little pointer you may want to consider is using 20-30 lb mono as backing just to fill the spool and then splice on to it the amount of braided line which you anticipate will be consistently used. At 2+ times the cost of mono it goes a lot further to spool up several rigs.

My casts rarely go over 20 -30 yards so I usually double my casting distance and allow a little extra for cutting out tangles that may occur. By using this method, I can use one spool of line for about three rigs instead of commiting all the line to filling up a reel on only one rig.

Kevin
Kevin

Re: Braided Line

Interesting reading here....as for the knots...they aren't slipping, they are cutting themselves in two...common with superbraids due to thin dia/high strength.
Those using super glue on their knots are binding the line to prevent it from tightening to the point of cutting itself.
LubeDude, did you say you don't like the braids on spinning gear???? That's where I've found it really shines for me. I've used 10lb fireline for years on my spinning gear for walleye, jigging mostly, but some cranking too. I like the 30lb fireline for trolling...you can straiten some serious size hooks and still get the bait back.
For baitcasting, I still prefer mono though..one wrong move with braid on a baitcaster and you might as well get the fillet knife out cause you ain't gettin' that strand that dug clear to the spool out in any quick fasion.
Anybody have any experience with Strens new braid yet???

Re: Braided Line

If you tie the proper knot for the line u are
using you wont need any kind of glue under any
situation.

Re: Braided Line

Not Stren line but I did try that Berkleys Gorilla braid and it to joined the wanabe box..I troll some heavy lumber and right now we are going between four and five miles an hour.

I personally don't use anything less than a 25lb.test or less than a 40LB leader..I like the braid becauase of the extra yardage I can get on my rig..

Last gator I caught I was 150 feet back when she hit..with the heavier stuff I would have not had alot of line left on the rig I was using..Now my Shamano 6000 I can put some serious line on it..

I did pick up those titanium leaders JB..Wanting some bucks for them but I am sure down the road I will have no regrets..Your right No Sleep but there are times shall I say we get a little lazy...And that is usually when the monster hits..

Re: Braided Line

I was using 30lb power pro last year for the first time. Oregonduck is right in that the Palomer knot will not slip. What i was warned about and had happened is that once a large fish hits your line back off the drag because the braided line has no stretch. I lost a nice musky at night that way. Set the hook, felt the head shake from the fish, and lost a $15. topwater spinnerbait. I kick myself now for not remembering that little tip.
