Bracket Location Restoration Project

I have a 1979 Starcraft 18 ft Day Cruiser that I have been restoring. I have put a new transom in and intend to hang a 115 Johnson on the back, Purchased a aluminum bracket that came off a 79 starcraft. I am new to restoring , @Question is, Where should the prop be located , Where should I place the bracket ? Where should the prop be located in regards to the bottom of the boat. How far should the prop be placed below the bottom of the boat ? Someone stated the cavitation plate should be 1 inch below the bottom of the boat , Is this correct ?

Welcome mk.
I've always been instructed that the bottom of the cavitation plate should be level with the bottom of hull at the transom or a smidge below, not above. Sounds like you have a Chieftain there. Pics would be great and I'm very interested to see the bracket and your progress. A few of us are resoring boats just like yours so check out our threads in the signatures.

Sorry to disagree Michael but the recommended starting point is even with the keel to about an inch or so above. mk1959, there is a formula (although I forget what it is) for brackets that basically says for every extra X of set back you can raise the motor X. Maybe someone will chime in with the correct numbers. If they don't, the gurus in the prop section will probably know.
