I'm no pro at any of this. I bought a very clean 2010 boat with a 2010 250 optimax pro-xs this winter. The motor was winterized. I wanted to run the engine before I put it in the water for the season, so I hooked up the hose attachment to the water intake. The motor fired right up and seems to be idling well. However I gave it a minute and a half and no water began to eject from the engine. I shut it down for fear of burning it out. Am I missing maybe a valve or something that needs to be turned from winterization? Do I need to let it run longer? Or am I most likely looking at a bad water pump?

If I were you I would change the impeller in the water pump just for piece of mind, since you just bought the boat.If I am not mistaken these motors have a thermostat that wont open until a certain temp has been reached.

You have to use a special earmuff or barrel to test these engine sas they have a 4 hole water pickup in front of lower unit, if regular muffs are used you need to block off the front intake holes..

You may have been using the flush port which is for flushing salt water out of it NOT running it.
Here's a link to a manual that might be for your motor.

Just put some duct tape over the holes on the front of the l/u. just be sure it's removed before launching.
