Hi,

1990 j60elesm is what i have.

I was out in it yesterday and about 10 mins into the trip it stopped. Tried to restart it but to no avail, checked leads fuel supply spark plugs and all seemed fine.
left the cowling off and after about 20 mins when i tried it again it started but would only go about 5 mph. Now I have heard about SLOW mode so seening as i had the cowling off I disconnected the wire from the sensor at the top of the block but to no avail it still went slow.
Could my issue be a thermostat failure ?
The engine was hot but not overly hot and it had been running for 10 mins before i put my hand on it.

Ran it on muffs this morning (which I hate doing as i don't trust them ) and the water coming from the tell tale was hot after 10 secs , not extremely hot but none the less hot. I am of the thinking the water should be cold coming from the tell tale , if I'm wrong in this thinking please let me know.

thanks.

Re: Bogging down

I know on my older 140, the water stream is warm when first started, so I'm not sure that's an issue. You'd probably be better off to get a temp guage and verify the temps at the heads to see if it's even getting hot. I'd start at the top: compression test/spark test/fuel system test. What you described could be any number of things.

Agree with the above post ^^^^^^^^ you have some diagnosis to do to begin with.

Re: Bogging down

forgot to include that i did the basics when i got it home,

compression good
spark good
fuel lins and pump seem to be ok
carbs diassambled and no junk found

I have it all assembled and am thinking of going out later in it to see if prob is still there but i just don't want to be stranded agin on her if she breaks down in the same way.

Re: Bogging down

ok took out the boat this evening and not a bother on it, other than it was a bit hard to start. I had to tilt it all the way up and drop it in the water once started to get her going.Other than that it ran like a dream...

Maybe my problem is a dodgy temp sensor or stat??

Anyone any thoughts ??

Re: Bogging down

Having to tilt the motor all the way up to start it.. It sounds to me like you have a carb. problem. Are the floats set correctly? By tilting the motor all the way up you would change the float angle. Even it you have one carb set wrong it would make it hard to start. I have run across a few bad temp sensors in the past, but when they failed, they failed. No intermittent failure.

3 carbs are set the same and they don't seem to be leaking fuel or sneezing. I'm going to take it out later on and if the issue is still there I'll strip them down and redo the floats.
