1985 70 HP Evinrude. It bogged down yesterday after about 15 min of running. I had the same problem last year and figured it might be the Carbs. So I rebuilt all 3 with Sierra kits, new plugs NGK,New wires, and a New fuel filter and fresh gas. When I first took it out it ran great just like a brand new motor, got on plane and ...well just running sweet. Then after I stopped and restarted it I could not get on plane. When I gave it full throttle it died. It restarted fine but i could only go slow.I also converted the VRO to a Pump last year and mix 16oz oil to 6 gallons of gas. The water coming out of the back is steady and I can keep my hand under w/o getting 3rd degree burns.I am just lost as to what to do next.Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank You.

Hmmm, these years of johnsons sometimes have powerpack failure after being run for a while. Google CDI troubleshooting guide as I believe you need to look further up the ignition stream. About a $76.00 part if I recall.

Kinda' sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Are you certain the fuel tank vent is clear? Is the primer bulb staying hard? Have you tried pumping the bulb while this is happening?

Is the timer base advancing when you hit the throttle ? Have you tried hitting the primer when this happens ?

I knew the spark plug police would catch that. :D I seriously doubt that running NGK's instead of Champions has anything to do with the issues posed in the OP.

First off thanks for all the advice from everyone. How do you check the timer base? The fuel bulb stays hard.I was wondering could the coil pack cause this problem? Since it runs well till it gets warmed up?Since i rebuilt the carbs it does run alot better in "slow" mode.I tried running again this weekend and the same thing happened, when i tried to plane it bogged down and died but hen i restarted it it would go slow and when i advanced the throttle and it started to bog down i retracted the throttle to slow it ran better?. I did not replce the fuel line from the pump to the carbs, could that have anything to do with it. Also a little more about the boat it sat for 3 years, and i purchased from my friend who's grandfather owned it and kept it in great shape i mean the inside is clean. Not sure if this has any bearing on the problem just figured i would provided as much info as i can.
Thanks again.
