Re: Boats with Thru-Hull Exhaust

Listening to other people's thru-hull doesn't bother me.. If I want quiet time I can always find a cove. Harleys on the other hand I can't stand, I'd lump them into the same category as the kids in their economy cars that run huge fart can mufflers.. I enjoy the sound of a good running v8, but smaller engines just (to me) sound like crap with amplified exhaust.

Heck, I am surprised at how load the little 3.0 in my boat is (from shore) once it's on plane.

I had the through hulls. Then I tried a new Hummer. Next was a lifted 4X4 with a 10.8 diesel. I think I will just go a head and schedule the enhancement.

I also have a Liberator with a thru hull and turn down tips. The sound is spectacular!!! You all can just come down to West Virginia and you will have NO problems. Even the cops drive loud cars and boats. The city of Charleston Police have a '69 Camaro that has a blown 454...NICE...Even though I am a ford man. My river sits down in the valley so the exhaust bounces off of the hills. Nothing like it. All my life I have heard the soft ring of open exhausts on our river...

Evansville Indiana? Hmmm...

STATE OF INDIANA
State-Specific Boating Safety Requirements

8. Muffling Devices
A person may not operate a motorboat on Indiana waters unless the boat motor is
equipped with:
1. A muffler;
2. An underwater exhaust; or
3. Other device that muffles or suppresses the sound of the exhaust to prevent excessive and unusual noise at all speeds.

I guess you better look up the KY laws... The majority of the Ohio river (around me) is KY waters.

Here is what I found...
Mufflers and Noise Levels:

Any boat operated on the waters of Kentucky must have an effective muffling system to reduce noise. It is illegal to modify the muffling system if the result is a louder exhaust.

HA, exhaust laws are like bumper hight laws......a joke

Exactly... the water patrol around here could care less about sound. They keep an eye out for the real drunk people and leave the rest of us alone.

I actually passed the AZ law about 4 years ago, which is 86 dB at 50 feet. They used a sound gun at the ramp and I've seen a lot more muffler "tips" since then on bigger power.

I wouldn't know... 80% of the boats around here have thru hulls and 99% of the people I go boating with have them.

IMO, they need to make the loud harley's illegal before they come after the performance boaters.

The modified Harley exhausts are illegal in most all jurisdictions.

Re: Boats with Thru-Hull Exhaust

That comment about waking up fish was really funny. I toyed with the idea of thru hulls on a v-8 boat I had because I loved the way it sounded on muffs. I sold it before I did it, but I think the selection switch may be the way to go. I've also had to yell over somebody's boat noise before, so I think there is something to be said about it being annoying too.

its so true! in southwest ohio, people understand watersports, OHDNR knows that boating is one of the last free frontiers of man, its a place where we can rip off our ties and dockers, our wives can put down the kid, and yep, your kids can put down the homework and just go out and be FREE. from what i have seen DNR does a fantastic job of seperating laws and ........laws. a plastered drunk guy rather than a honest mans "loud" speed boat. Come on! I am into off roading too, at our off road parks we are free, you can have some beer and drive your jeep/truck/whatever around the woods and have a good time, you just cant be outta control. its been like this around here for as long as i can remember and it works just fine.

for all you nah sayers.....you suck! move france with all the rest of the weiners!

I agree with the prudes in here and also hate thru- hull exhaust but for entirely different reasons. Through hull exhaust is waaay too quiet for my taste.

The only way to go is 8 unmuffled 2 1/2 inch pipes. The neighbor kids love it too

Adding through hull exhaust only requires a hole saw and a few small exhaust changes.

lol... I'd vote for you! Anyone running a Ford with open exhaust has to be a good guy. You should post a sound clip of your boat!!

Our Water Patrol may not care either, but it's yet another way for them to introduce themselves to look for the offense you mentioned.

A burned out license plate light has got me pulled over at 2am.

Thanks!!!! I can't tell you how many boaters of all ages wanted me to get on it and put on a show. One family flagged me down and beached their boat so I could go down river a bit, turn around and scream past them at WOT. :)

Briggs, I highly recommend Crownlines since I am on my second, I also highly recommend corsa or captains call, yes as my wife says its a pecker picker upper but after our first season with it my wife makes sure were running out the sides more then I do. Yes I try to be courteous of others near shore, in no wake zones and anchorages but as you know theres nothing like the sound of a big block. The nicest thing about a silent choice system is that if your pulling a new skier or wake boarder you simply hit a switch and you can't even tell your boats running. We have made several long runs 40+ miles with the exhaust out the sides and you can hold a normal conversation inside the boat, in fact theres much more wind noise then the low roll of the 454 inside the cockpit.

Re: Boats with Thru-Hull Exhaust

when i was in highschool i went to a tech school taking auto technology. i went with a guy named charlie whose dad raced offshore 40' boats, his dads was a catamaram (spelling), we rebuilt the engine in my 77 trans am in his pops boat shop back in the day. he had two blown 455 on his boat. we used to watch dvds of splash outs in dvd player in his not for hire chevy duelly with matching paint job. im gonna do some research, im pretty sure the boat was called the intimidator, it was a catamaram and yellow with checkered flag. its hard to google intimidator since dale. it was an awesome boat. Once he let me and his son wax and polish it for cincinnatis cavalcade of customs
