Re: Boats are very time consuming and expensiave

It ain't just boats. We have 2 baots and a 5th wheel. The first year with an RV is buying stuff and mods to make yourself happy. The boats don't need that much upkeep because theay are smaller boats. Just washing and waxing a 31 ft long 12 ft tall RV is a PITA.

But the OP really has bought both a boat and an RV combined. So I can see where he's coming from.

Of course we could all just seat home on the couch county unspent money. That would be fun. Our boat and RV are a great way to spend time as a family. In the words of a famous commercial: Priceless.

I have to say i'm at the point where I'm really getting sick to death of all the maintenance projects I always seem to be doing. The only solace I have really is my boat is rock solid with just winterizing each year which I pay for...knock on wood. It's the house that seems to never seems to let up on me. Owning a really large house seems great in theory but is constant work. I can only imagine if my boat was also nickel and diming my time too.

I find this to be good info. I have a 22' cuddy cabin and with thoughts of upgrading to a cabin cruiser, I may just keep it for a while.

I don't regret upgrading for a minute. I've gone from a 21' WAC to a 24' express to a 27' express. Cruising and weekending are too much fun not to experience them if you have an interest. At some point I'll want to (or need to, for financial reasons) simplify, but I'm glad I didn't miss the experience.

Some of the comments here are somewhat unexpected. If its so much trouble and costs so much, why do you own a boat in the first place? My fleet is up to 6 now, plus both my boys have their own. Of course, all are garage kept, and IMHO that makes all the difference in the world. Honestly, I haven't had one issue in 10 years or more. Just the winterizing and fluid changes, etc. Some rainy days I actually have to look for something to do, so I'll go out and polish up a couple of them....LOL.

Even if the cost were a lot more, having the respite is what its all about. I can be stressed out from work and after 20 minutes in the boat I forget all about it. Besides, how can you complain about a hobby where all the other participants have babes in bikinis on the deck?

No complaints here -- I own 2 boats. The smaller one is kept in a storage unit. The 21'er I bought an indoor dry slip for. I no longer wish to launch/retrieve. The inside is cleaned every time I return, the dock girls rinse the hull and flush the motor. The HOA fee is only $120 monthly. When I return if anything from a scheduled service to raw water pump needs done-- just tell the dockmaster. She gets waxed twice a year-- just tell the dockmaster. I'd rather pay them and spend my time on the water than working on the boat. Your view is better than mine most of the time-- few bikinis on the ocean.

I got a small used aluminum boat, with an electric trolling motor. it doesn't plane or go fast like my bigger boat, but I spent little money on gas just to get it to the lake and had a blast exploring, might have $300 in it so far:D

You're doing something wrong. Around here, the bigger the house the less work you have to do. Mowing the grass is an entirely different story.

I ask that same question of people that have children... I guess people love their kids even when they are smoking weed in the back yard and people love their boats when they are breaking and requiring a Saturday afternoon to clean.

The problem is it is a 1996 build and things are starting to get dated after living there so long. I'm constantly updating things. For example this summer I installed whole house audio myself which was a fantastic pain in the butt. I mean really hard and time consuming to run wires through walls and ceilings. Then the wife wanted wider trim in the kitchen and so I installed the really wide stuff which I had to prime and paint first. Really wide/victorian, oak trim is a pain to get it to match up when there are a lot of odd angles. Now it's time to remodel the main floor bathroom, then the master bathroom (I'll have that contracted though) and then she want a new paver driveway. All that and we are looking to buy a lake home as well. Go figure the one she wants is a massive 6 bedroom...more stuff to do. I think I would go crazy if I had to do stuff to the boat too. Sometimes I just want to sell the house and buy a new.

I know a guy with a Carver -- two engines and it does not plane or go fast either. He has $36K in it and it sits at the dock-- put the ac on and drink beer thinking what a mistake that boat was.

Lawn care is easy-- they come every week. The mulch is done, grass cut, edged lawn, bushes cut, trees trimmed, fertilizers, weed killers, repair irrigation,,,,,, then POOF they are gone until the next week... just 1 check a month...

I don't know anyone with a 3,000 sq.ft or larger home that does much, if any home repairs. If you can afford $750K and up for a home, you can afford contractors do the work.

A 6 bedroom home is a McMansion. They're in the process of building 25 of them (6 bedroom/7 bath) on a 75 acre parcel down the road. You don't get to "massive", at least around here, until you have an indoor pool, tennis court, etc. and aerial photography is the only way to view the house in a single photograph.

Thats funny. We are looking at a 3,000 sq.ft home near Raleigh, NC (clayton) and it is $348K for new construction with all of the upgrades. How I don't miss living in metro D.C.

The homes prices in Western Howard County are nutz. There are 134 homes for sale in our zipcode (42.5 square miles) right now with an average list price of $777,162.

Bought out here 25 years ago. Sitting on 30 acres of relocation and retirement income ;)

I think thats our plan. Things are getting built out so fast down here. Its really hard to find a development that is not cookie cutter with houses on top of each other.

WoW!!! Only 3100 sq ft here but only 4 BR and only 4 baths. Home repairs are what contractors are for and they just show up every Tuesday to take care of all the things that grow. No pool, no tennis court,,,,, one of the poor ones for sure.
